An envelope blank forming machine for forming generally rectangular booklet envelope blanks and generally diagonal envelope blanks on the same machine includes a pair of removable turnbars, adjustable pull rolls and an adjustable cutoff device. Preselected adjustment of these components provides a generally rectangular blank or a generally diagonally shaped blank. Retractable trim devices are provided in cutting relation with the blank when diagonal blanks are being formed. Seal flap cutters and first and second flap cutters are provided to form the booklet seal flap and bottom flap on the booklet envelope blank. These cutters are removed and replaced with seal flap corner cutters, bottom flap corner cutters and diagonal trim cutters when generally diagonal envelope blanks are being formed. |

A machine wherein flat blanks are fed from a stack thereof to be folded and glued into envelopes. The machine is provided with an optical sensing device which is operable to sense when the stack of blanks diminishes to a predetermined height whereupon the machine will be turned off automatically so as to prevent a plurality of blanks from being simultaneously fed into the machine from the diminished stack to jam the machine. The machine operator can then add blanks to the stack and restart the machine. The sensing device can be turned off by the operator in order to run all of the blanks in the stack through the machine at the end of a blank run or at the end of a working day. |

Apparatus and method are disclosed for adjusting the entry angle of a continuous web into an envelope-making machine. The entry angle of the web is capable of adjustment even though web supply roll, printing means, splicer, and other equipment normally located before the feed end of an envelope making machine are stationary and not attached to the envelope-making machine. The apparatus for adjusting web angle includes a first turn bar unit; a plate attached to the body of the envelope-making machine near the feed end of the machine, which can swivel about a point, the means of attachment being the point about which the plate swivels; and a second turn bar unit attached to the swivel plate. As the web advances into the first turn bar unit it is flat. The first turn bar unit turns the web so that as it moves from the turn bar unit it is on its edge or in edgewise orientation. The web remains on its edge as it enters the second turn bar unit. After passing through the second turn bar unit the web is again in a flat orientation. With the web on its edge the swivel plate is capable of being moved so as to permit the entry of the web into the envelope-making machine at desired angles. The adjustment of web angle is achieved without movement of any equipment except the swivel plate and without damage to the web. |

Blanks removed from a paper web are cut for the making of card envelopes with a printed closure or for the making of so-called banker envelopes with a broad closure. Blanks cut for the making of card envelopes must be turned in their plane before being conveyed for the following processing. The apparatus for turning the blanks includes a turntable with suction air bores, segmented rollers, a belt acting as a slideway and conveying chains. |
