A method for making a flexible packaging laminate having a built-in opening and reclose feature, comprises the steps of:

a pressure-sensitive adhesive (20) onto one surface of a first structure (10) comprising at least one layer of flexible material;

adhesively joining the first structure (10) to a second structure (42) via the pressure-sensitive adhesive so as to form a laminate, there being no permanent laminating adhesive in the laminate, the second structure (42) being coextensive with the first structure (10) and comprising at least one layer of flexible material, wherein one of the first (10) and second (42) structures comprises an outer structure (10) and the other comprises an inner structure (42).

A flexible packaging laminate is formed to have a built-in opening and reclose feature by forming the laminate as a two-part structure having an outer structure (10) joined in face-to-face relation with an inner structure (42). Score lines are formed in both structures to enable an opening to be formed through the laminate by lifting an opening portion (23) (e.g., a flap or the like) of the two structures out of the plane of the laminate. The score line (52) through the outer structure (10) defines a larger opening than the score line (62) through the inner structure (42), such that a marginal region (90) of the outer structure extends beyond the edge of the opening portion of the inner structure. A pressure-sensitive adhesive (20) is used to re-adhere the marginal region (90) to an underlying surface of the inner structure adjacent the opening through the laminate.

9 Pouch with preinserted straw US299982 1999-04-27 US6076664A 2000-06-20 James W. Yeager
A pouch for holding liquids includes a pre-inserted straw within the pouch. A top end of the straw is exposed by removing a portion of the pouch. For manufacture, a web of flexible packaging material, suitable for forming a pouch or bag for storing liquids, is advanced forward in a pouch forming direction. A single straw of suitable length to fit within the confines of a resulting pouch is cut from a continuous length of straw material. The single straw is placed onto the web of packaging material in a location that will be on the inside surface of a single wall of the pouch and there it is secured in place preferably by a heat seal between one side of the straw and the inside surface of the pouch wall. The resulting pouch web material, having a plurality of straws positioned along its length provides a feedstock for forming pouches with pre-inserted straws when using a so called form and fill method of forming pouches or when making pre-made pouches. The pre-inserted straw is totally enclosed within the confines of each resultant pouch and therefore eliminates the need to be attached to the outside of the pouch or be inserted into the pouch through one of the walls of the pouch.
10 Bags and method of making bags US454374 1995-06-06 US5957824A 1999-09-28 Bernard Lerner; William M. Cronauer
Methods of making a container strip in the form of a chain of interconnected preopened bags with openings preferably having longitudinal dimensions of at least about 1/64 inch is disclosed. The container strip provides greatly enhanced facility for bag registration and opening during packaging operations utilizing the improved container strip. Processes of forming a chain of preopened bags are also disclosed. Face and back plastic webs are fed along individual paths of travel to a common path. In one embodiment the webs are differentially tensioned while in their independent paths by stretching the face web more than the back web such that the face web will retract longitudinally more than the back web upon release of the web tension. While so tensioned edge seals are formed between the webs to convert the webs into a tube and longitudinally spaced transverse seals are formed between the webs to delineate bottoms of bags. Transverse lines of weakness are formed in the back web to facilitate separation of bags from the remainder of the web during a subsequent use. Tension in individual bag sections of the face web is released by forming longitudinally spaced transverse separations of the sections and thereby producing a space between each contiguous pair of sections. In other embodiments pairs of transverse lines of severance are formed in a front section of the webs and parts between the lines of severance are removed to form the novel bags without the need for differential stretching.
11 Continuous roll of plastic bags US59436 1998-04-09 US5921390A 1999-07-13 Ebrahim Simhaee
A multi-ply plastic bag from a continuous strip of bags on a roll is supplied to a user with the top of the bag partially opened. A tear line between the bottom of a leading bag and a top of a subsequent bag separates the individual bags. A broad slit centrally located in the tear line passes through all but one ply of the strip of bags. The bag dispenser has an upwardly projecting tongue which engages the slit in the tear line when a user draws a bag from the dispenser. The tongue impedes the subsequent bag from moving forward. The adjacent bags separate along the tear line. The ply which does not have a slit rides over the tongue and pulls apart the plies at the opening of the subsequent bag before the leading bag completely separates from the subsequent bag.

13 Packages made with both high-frequency/radio-frequency seals and conventional heat/pressure seals using combinations of polar and non-polar polymers US696238 1996-08-13 US5769772A 1998-06-23 Jay M. Wiley
A package having multiple seals in close proximity is set forth. At least one of the seals is accomplished through the use of a polar polymer that bonds to an opposing panel in the package when exposed to an alternative electromagnetic field. The strength of the sealing can be controlled by the type and the amount of the polar polymer that is present as well as the field strength of the electromagnetic radiation, and its duration. The region to be sealed by the electromagnetic radiation can also be precisely controlled.

18 Bone-in food packaging article US979520 1992-11-20 US5302402A 1994-04-12 Vincent J. Dudenhoeffer; Jeffrey M. Schuetz
An article for shrink packaging bone-in food masses such as meat cuts comprising a thin-walled heat shrinkable thermoplastic film bag and a thick-walled nonheat shrinkable thermoplastic film patch having its inner surface bonded to the bag outer surface. Both surfaces have high energy as the sole bonding means and the patch-bag bond strength increases during heat shrinking around the meat mass such that the bag portion adhered to the patch shrinks less than the rest of the bag.
19 Apparatus and method for making a reclosable storage bag US997701 1993-01-14 US5284002A 1994-02-08 Dwight P. Fowler; Andrew McG. Martin
A storage bag and a method and apparatus for forming such a storage bag. The storage bag contains a reclosure tie formed as an integral marginal portion of the bag beyond an edge of the bag. The marginal portion includes overlying layers of bag material that form an elongated structure along an axis with first and second ends. A fused closure is formed in the marginal portion parallel to the axis and over a portion of the marginal portion spaced from one end thereof. This structure defines a tail and open loop that wrap around an opened bag thereby to close the bag in a positive fashion.
20 Bag with closeable flap and method of manufacturing same US690676 1985-01-11 US4790670A 1988-12-13 Matthew Barbaro
A bag having a closeable flap portion, and a method of manufacturing same, are disclosed. The bag includes first and second panel portions, and a top flap portion extending from and integral to the second panel portion along a fold line adjacent to an opening between the first and second panel portions. The inner surfaces of the first and second panel portions have surface characteristics rendering them capable of being firmly heat sealed together along the side edges thereof, while the outer surfaces of at least the second panel portion and of the flap portion along the side edges have surface characteristics rendering them capable of only being weakly heat sealed together. The flap portion is initially folded onto the outer surface of the second panel portion and is held thereinplace along the side edges by means of a weakened seam achieved by virtue of heat sealing of the side edges of the first and second panel portions and the flap portion. The end of the flap portion remote from the fold line is adapted to be pulled away from the outer surface of the second panel portion to break the weakened seal between the flap portion and the second panel portion while maintaining the integrity of the side edge seams along the inner surfaces of the first and second panel portions.
