1 Folding carton blank and method of forming same US613344 1990-11-14 US5071401A 1991-12-10 Raymond O. Bertsch
A modified glue flap of a folding carton blank for preventing glue from being squeezed out during the step of adhering the glue flap to the opposite end panel. The face of the glue flap engaged by the glue back-up wheel includes a protrusion near the trailing edge of the flap. Engagement of the protrusion by the back-up wheel causes the glue wheel to skip the trailing area of the flap. The absence of glue in this area prevents glue from being squeezed out when sealing pressure is subsequently applied to the glue flap and the opposite end panel. The protrusion may take the form of an embossed ridge, forming a channel on the opposite side of the protrusion for receiving any excess glue which would have been squeezed out.
2 Apparatus for folding and gluing carton blanks US819341 1977-07-27 US4144800A 1979-03-20 Charles C. Hughes
Flat open carton blanks are fed by a conveyor past two rotating plows located on each side of the conveyor. A first plow is located upstream of the second plow, and a glue applicator is located in a position to apply glue to one edge of the blank. A stationary plow or wedge is located ahead of each rotating plow. As the blank is advanced, a first panel is folded upon the blank by the first rotating plow. Glue is applied to the edge of the first panel. As the blank is conveyed past the second rotating plow, a panel on the opposite side of the blank is folded upon the blank with its edge in contact with the glue applied to the edge of the first panel. The thus folded blank is passed through the nip of press rolls to press the two glued edges together. A diverter is provided to reject double folded blanks. Upstream of the first plow are at least two sets of creasing rolls which back-break at least two preformed score lines in the blank to facilitate opening of the glued blank on a cartoner.

A machine for folding materials is disclosed in which the portion of the material is engaged and folded by a rotary cam such that the surface of the portion is engaged and not the edges of the portion. In the preferred embodiment, creasing rollers are positioned along the fold line above the rotary cam folders such that the fold is made very accurately.
4 Folder/gluer machine for paperboard blanks US778323 1997-01-02 US5827162A 1998-10-27 Ephraim Rubin; Raymond P. Lemore
A device for folding paperboard blanks, the device including folding rails for supporting the blanks traveling through the device which define a path of travel for the blanks and a conveyor for conveying the blanks through the device. The device further includes a first operator side elongated helix folding assembly rotatably supported at each end, a second operator side elongated helix folding assembly rotatably supported at each end and aligned with the first operator side helix folding assembly, a first drive side elongated helix folding assembly rotatably supported at each end, and a second drive side elongated helix folding assembly rotatably supported at each end and aligned with the first drive side helix folding assembly. Actuators are connected to the ends of each second helix folding assembly for translating the ends either toward and away or above and below the blank path. A servo motor having a resolver may be connected to each helix folding assembly for rotating it to fold the blanks. An incremental motion controller which determines and stores the position of the helix folding assemblies from data obtained from the servo motor resolvers may also be provided. A target may be disposed on each helix folding assembly and a proximity sensor located adjacent each helix folding assembly for detecting the presence of its associated target for determining the home position of each helix folding assembly.

6 Folding apparatus for corrugated paperboard blanks US548967 1975-02-11 US3992982A 1976-11-23 Martinus C. Huiskes
Apparatus for folding and sealing corrugated paperboard blanks having scores and slots therein comprising a blank feeding means, a conveying means to move the blanks including top and/or bottom folding means, such bottom folding means extending along the full length of the folding apparatus, such top folding means extending over the upstream portion of the folding apparatus, guide means for laterally guiding the panels to be folded, and an alignment means at the outlet end of the apparatus to align the folded panels.
7 Helical folder for paperboard blanks US137104 1980-04-04 US4254692A 1981-03-10 Louis M. Sardella
Apparatus for folding paperboard blanks, fed one by one in timed sequence into said apparatus and transported through it, includes helical blank contacting means rotatable in time with the transport means about a longitudinal axis extending generally in the direction of travel.
8 Apparatus for folding and gluing carton blanks US690644 1976-05-27 US4056046A 1977-11-01 Charles C. Hughes
Flat open carton blanks are fed by a conveyor past two rotating plows located on each side of the conveyor. A first plow is located upstream of the second plow, and a glue applicator is located between the two plows.
9 Apparatus for folding carton sheet US703590 1976-07-08 US4041849A 1977-08-16 Yasuhiro Tsukasaki
An apparatus and method for folding a container blank from a first channel shape to a final flat parallelogram shape by guiding the container blank along two parallel rails, past a plurality of grooved folding rollers, which are rotatably mounted at spaced locations along the rails. The rollers have top flange portions which abut the top of the container blank adjacent the folded edge and side faces abuting the container blank on the outer surface of the channel adjacent the folded edge, the side faces being increasingly inclined toward the container blank in the direction of motion of the blank along the rails to gradually fold the channel portion of the container blank back as the blank passes the rollers and forms the flattened parallelogram shape. The rollers may be separable into a top flange portion and a bottom side face portion which are adjustably engageable with each other to form grooves of varying depth to accommodate container blanks of varying thickness.
