66 CUTTING TOOL FOR PACKAGING US11959226 2007-12-18 US20090151168A1 2009-06-18 Jeffry Dadam
A cutting tool configured to cut packaging. The tool includes a handle and a blade having a cutting portion. The blade is affixed to the handle with the cutting portion extending outwardly from the handle. The cutting portion of the blade resides inside a retractable sheath that is movable between a blade guarding position and a blade exposing position. The sheath is coupled to the handle by a biasing assembly that biases the sheath into the blade guarding position whereat the cutting portion of the blade is received completely inside the sheath. The sheath retracts to the blade exposing position when the sheath is pressed against the packaging with sufficient force to overcome the biasing force applied thereto by the biasing assembly. When the sheath is retracted, the cutting portion of the blade is placed into contact with the packaging against which the sheath is pressed.

78 Paperboard carton cutting tool US10125715 2002-04-18 US06681491B2 2004-01-27 Alexander H. Currie
A carton cutting tool for cutting and opening a sealed peaked top of a paperboard carton comprises a first blade attached to a first handle and a second blade attached to a second handle. The first and second blades are pivotally coupled at respective distal ends thereof relative to a user and are movable between open and closed configurations in response to corresponding movements of the first and second handles. At a closed configuration, the second blade overlies the first blade while the second blade is offset approximately 90 degrees from the first blade at the open configuration. The first blade defines a slot extending longitudinally therealong for receiving the peaked top of a carton therein. One longitudinal edge of the slot presents a sharp cutting edge. The second blade includes a slightly convex cutting edge such that a peaked top of a carton that is positioned in the slot is pinched and severed upon a movement of the second blade between open and closed configurations.
79 Box cutter with deflectable safety shield US10011222 2001-10-25 US20030079351A1 2003-05-01 Raymond E. Davis
A deflectable safety shield extends transversely across a cutting plane in a protective guard position completely overlying the cutting edge of a utility knife. A portion of the shield extends over-center with respect to the cutting edge, thereby tending to hold the shield in the guard position in response to contact of the shield against the operator at the normal angle of engagement during follow-through that accompanies rapid slicing hand movements. The shield is resiliently biased for movement to the guard position by a torsion spring. An outwardly-turned flange portion of the shield provides an angularly offset leverage point for reacting the torsion spring when the operator desires to perform a cutting operation. The shield swings away from the cutting plane automatically in response to pressure engagement of the offset flange portion against the box surface, thus exposing the cutting edge.
