The thread snips include two metal blades connected together, adjacent their rounded, rear ends, so that their pointed, front ends may be moved or pivoted relative to each other, in planes generally parallel with the planes of the metal blades, between open and closed positions. The rearward portion of each metal blade has a reduced thickness. Plastic inserts are molded onto these rearward, reduced thickness portions so that the inner facing side surfaces of the plastic inserts define a smooth continuation of the inner facing side surfaces of the metal blades. The rearward ends of the plastic inserts are thicker than their forward ends. The increased thicknesses force the rear ends of the metal blades apart, and thus cause the blades, forward of the point of connection, to bend or arch.

The handle members and elastomeric member have complementary, partly ball shapes providing an overall external configuration of a single ball. Another embodiment has a hollow, flexible ball completely covering and enclosing partially ball shaped handle members, the pivotal interconnections between the blades is concealed within the ball shaped covering, and a formed wire spring member is anchored at the interconnections and its opposite ends are seated against inner surfaces of the handle members. In each embodiment, manual squeezing pressure applied by a user's palm or fingers closes the blades against the bias of the elastomeric or wire spring member.

Cutting shears or scissors have pivotally connected blades and shank portions extending at an acute angle with respect to the cutting edges of the blades wherein handles of the shears connected to the shank portions lie forward of the pivot connection between the blades in the direction of cut of material to be cut by the shears. The shears handles are configured such that the handle to be grasped by the fingers of the operator's hand is fixed to a blade which has a surface adapted for supporting the shears during use thereof. The other blade is provided with a handle particularly adapted for receiving the thumb wherein rotation of the thumb together with thrust of the forearm in the direction of cut or closing action yields a large mechanical advantage without substantial manual effort. Handle configurations include a generally symmetrical handle having a transverse stirrup for engagement with the thumb and a contoured closed loop type thumb handle which is adapted to engage a large area of the thumb including the joint between the metacarpal and phalange bones.
