121 Endoscopic surgical instrument EP93115357.1 1993-09-23 EP0589454A3 1994-08-24 Aranyi, Ernie

An endoscopic surgical instrument (10) having a handle assembly (12), a body portion (18), and a tool mechanism (28) in which a pivoting handle (16) pivots about a stationary handle (14) to open and close the tool mechanism. The instrument includes a rotatable body portion, in which a rotation knob (52) is provided on the instrument at the stationary handle so that the user may rotate the body portion, and consequently the tool mechanism, using a single hand. Furthermore, an electrocautery connection (42) is provided which is positioned out of the line of sight of the surgeon, so that the surgeon may have an unobstructed view to the surgical site. The pivoting handle is provided with a rotatable connection (58) point for connecting the slidable rod member to essentially eliminate radial deflection of the rod within the outer tube during opening and closing of the handles.

The blade members (212,214) of the tool mechanism have a crescent shape and during assembly are provided with different radii of curvature relative to pivot point (216) to enhance the shearing action by providing for contact at a single point (246) as the blades are closed. The inside surface of each blade is angled toward the cutting edge to define a relief angle.

122 Safety scissors EP93110240.4 1993-06-26 EP0584488A1 1994-03-02 Malone, Jason R.

Synthetic fiber safety cutting scissors (10) comprising a pair of first and second elongated scissor blades (12,15), each having an inner side and an outer side and a continuous cutting edge (18,19), a plurality of non-cutting protrusions (20,21) part of the blade, and a gripping means (13,16); and a means (17) for pivotally securing said first and second scissor blades (12,15) to each other with said inner sides facing towards each other such that the said cutting (18,19) edges cooperate with each other to cut strands of synthetic fiber. It has been found that with the protrusions (20,21) that foreign objects such as fingers may be prevented from being intersected at the cutting edge.

Scissors (10), especially surgical scissors, having first (12) and second (14) pivotably connected elongate blade members wherein at least one of the blade members is associated with a restraining member (46) extending at least partially along said blade member and spaced therefrom to define a slot (56) in which the other blade member is at least partially received during cutting to restrain relative lateral movement of the blade members away from each other during a cutting stroke. This enables cutting of tough or slippery items which might otherwise cause the blades to splay away from each other.
135 CONVERTIBLE CUTTING INSTRUMENT EP09748542.9 2009-10-30 EP2373461A1 2011-10-12 CEDAR, Jonathan Newman; GODYCKI, Przemyslaw
Described embodiments relate to a convertible cutting instrument with improved safety. In particular, some embodiments relate to a convertible cutting instrument that may be safely handled while blades of the cutting instrument are in a closed position, with no exposed cutting edges. Some further embodiments relate to a convertible cutting instrument that comprises only two cutting edges, both of which are inwardly-facing when the cutting instrument is in a dual-blade configuration. This may render the cutting instrument safer for use as a pair of scissors or shears. A conversion mechanism may be used to convert an inwardly-facing cutting edge into an outwardly facing cutting edge, so that the cutting instrument may be used as a knife.
136 Scissors EP10158684.0 2010-03-31 EP2241418A1 2010-10-20 Hanakawa, Youichi

In a pair of scissors (H) including a movable blade (31) and a static blade (32) as a pair of plate-shaped blades respectively formed by press working, the movable blade and the static blade include edge line portions (311,321) for sliding against the other blades and recessed portions (31s,32s) which are formed at portions adjacent to the edge line portions with differences in level from the edge line portions, which are away from blade back faces (311a,321a) of the other blades in a thickness direction, and which have bottom faces substantially parallel to blade back faces of the edge line portions.

137 Handle of tool EP10158675.8 2010-03-31 EP2241414A1 2010-10-20 Hanakawa, Youichi

Each of handles of a pair of scissors (H) includes a hard core member (4) and a soft member (5) softer than the core member (1) and including a contact face portion (51) with which a finger of a user comes in contact, a bottomed recessed hole portion (52) adjacent to the contact face portion (51) and thinner than portions around it, and a through hole portion (53) continuous with the bottomed recessed hole portion (52). When the user inserts and removes his/her fingers into and from finger rings (121,21), the contact face portions (51) escape while compressing the through hole portions and the contact face portions (51) tilt by using the bottomed recessed hole portions (52) as fulcrums. Moreover, the bottomed recessed hole portions (52) and the through hole portions (53) continuous with each other are molded, which allows an elastic deformation property and a shape retaining property of the contact face portions (51) to go together and also contributes to durability of the soft members (5) including the contact face portions (51).

A package opener (10) includes first and second opposed elongate members joined together for scissor action about a pivot joint (16) . The first member (12) includes a first handle grip (18) at a rear end and a first cutting element (20) having a first blade (26) at a front end. The second member (13) includes a second handle grip (19) at a rear end and a second cutting element (21) having a second blade (27) at a front end thereof . The cutting elements include a leg portion (40,41) positioned between an arm segment (30,31) on which the pivot joint is located and the blade. Each cutting element also has a gap (G) in the blade portion. The leg portions and the gap enable the cutting elements, when opened, to fit over a package lip of a blister-type package so that the package opener can cut around the interior perimeter of the package lip to open the package. The multi-function package opener may also have a miniature utility knife blade (50) and at least one screwdriver (60).

The invention relates to a method for the production of hairdresser's scissors (1), wherein the scissor blades (23,33) are pre-deformed from blanks according to a specific degree of curvature in the direction facing away from the cutting edge. A hard metal material is then respectively welded in the form of a welding pass to the front faces of the scissor blades (23,33) which are directed towards each other in order to form the cutting edges (24,34). The curvature of the scissor blades (23,33) recedes as a result of heat action during the welding process. The welding passes are then ground in order to form cutting edges (23,24) and the scissor halves (2,3) are pre-straightened and are hardened. The hairdresser's scissors (1) are then straightened when hard in an assembled state. The invention also relates to hairdresser's scissors thus embodied. The cutting edges (24,34) are provided in the form of a full material extending along the entire thickness of the hairdresser's scissors (23,33), such that post-grinding or further straightening of the hairdresser's scissors is possible without incurring any losses in terms of functionality.
