By engagement of pad means with the upper side of a globular article, it is rolled along a slotted guideway in a compound rotation which periodically moves a projection of the article through the slot of the guideway. Such compound rotation in one form is effected by moving a pad above a linear guideway in a direction generally lengthwise of the guideway while the guideway is oscillated transversely of its length. A knife blade is rotated closely beneath the guideway to sever the projection of an article extending through the slot of the guideway. The knife blade is adjustable to vary the spacing between it and the bottom of the guideway to regulate the trimming of the projections.

A shuffle feed structure for feeding articles which require trimming of the ends, in which the article advancing faces of the shuffle members include a series of wedge-shaped surfaces for feeding and orienting the articles (such as pickles) so that each article rests against one of the inclined faces of the shuffle feed member and abuts the end face of one of the wedges. During the last step of movement of the shuffle feed the articles are carried through a pair of trimming knives which cut off the ends of the pickle so that the middle segment of each pickle is cut to a uniform length.

By engagement of pad means with the upper side of a globular article, it is rolled along guideways in a compound rotation, which periodically moves a projection of the article through the slot of the guideways. Such compound rotation is effected by forming the guideways as generally parallel curved convolutions forming a spiral path and moving pad means above such guideways in a direction generally lengthwise of the slot. The pad means is a circular pad which rotates above the spiral guideways. Knife blades are rotated closely beneath the guideways to sever projections of articles extending through the slot of the guideways.

An apparatus is disclosed for handling mushrooms hydraulically in a tank or series of tanks by generally flowing the mushrooms from a mushroom reservoir in an upstream location through a series of devices to a final downstream location where the mushrooms are cut to remove the roots and to separate the stems from the caps. The apparatus includes a device for controlling the rate and quantity movement of the mushrooms which are being hydraulically fed; a device for axially orienting the mushrooms into at least one row along a single axis; a device for directionally orienting the axially oriented mushrooms so that the caps face in the same direction, such as downstream; a device for receiving the directionally oriented mushrooms and for uniformly refeeding them sequentially in timed relationship, preferably in a cap down position; a device for receiving the mushrooms in a cap down position and reversing them to a cap up position; and a device for carrying the mushrooms in the cap up position past cutting blades which first cut off the roots and then separate the stems from the caps.
