This invention is directed to an apparatus and method for reducing the size of a material so as to make it possible to more readily and easily handle said material and, concurrently, to make said material into a useful product. An example of this is a treatment of wood remaining in a cutover forest. The wood may be in the form of stumps, broken logs, branches, limbs and the like. This wood may be processed so as to reduce the size of the wood. The wood which has been reduced in size is left on the ground to rot. An alternative to this is to reduce the size of the wood so as to make it more easily and readily handled and then to haul this reduced size wood to a processing area or processing plant for further processing. |

An improved separator machine for producing boneless comminuted meat and other smooth comminuted food products from a coarse agglomeration of fragmented hard and soft tissues which are separated automatically and continuously and discharged separately. The machine incorporates an improved mechanical separator utilizing a revolvable separator member reinforced structurally by cutting elements. The latter may also have external teeth. The machine is adapted to process raw material in a frozen, partially frozen or unfrozen state and is particularly suitable for processing red meat as well as poultry and fish.

Apparatus for comminuting meat comprises a housing in which is journaled a motor-driven shaft supporting two axially spaced rings of rotary teeth each cooperating with and surrounded by a ring of stationary teeth to comminute meat which is admitted first into the range of one ring of rotary teeth to undergo a coarse comminuting action during passage between the rotary teeth and the teeth of the corresponding stationary ring. A cylindrical or conical internal surface of the housing guides coarsely comminuted meat into the range of the other rotary ring so that the material undergoes a fine comminuting action during passage between the teeth of the other rotary ring and the teeth of the associated stationary ring.

Apparatus for deaerating sausage batter and the like either alone or in combination with emulsifying treatment of the product where means is provided for centrifugally separating and removing unwanted foreign objects from the sausage batter incident to the deaeration thereof. An emulsifier assembly for deaerating apparatus having a rotatable sleeve including radially inwardly extending impeller vanes for rapidly imparting rotation to the batter and feeding it through the emulsifier. A rotating attenuator receives the batter ejected from the emulsifier and centrifugally thins out the batter for contact with the vacuum atmosphere. Deaerating apparatus having a piston-type discharge pump at the lower end of the machine which alternately reciprocates with a sliding valve arrangement so that material is pumped out of the vacuum chamber in a positive, continuous manner. A feedhopper arrangement having a discharge outlet at its lower end with means for elevating the hopper to the feed position, connecting the discharge outlet to the machine inlet and control means for starting and stopping the drive motor for the emulsifier associated with the feeding of the material from the hopper.
