This invention relates to improvements in polishers for cereals, and more specifically, to a cereal polisher with a specialization for sorghum, for the specific reason that this cereal presents certain difficulties in refinement, that is to say in the husking of it. The polisher comprises a set of spaced disc-like stones mounted on a cylinder for rotation about a shaft and surrounded by a mesh. The grain is inserted at one end of the cylinder and removed at the other end and is polished by striking the stones. The grain when bouncing off the stones may strike and be deflected from a set of vanes that vary in position from substantially parallel to the stones to skewed positions causing various degrees of axial deflection, thereby determining the degree of polishing.

Covers equipment and processes that are useful in degerminating or dehulling kernels of cereal and seeds. A preferred embodiment of the equipment has a frame on which a housing is mounted. A rotary assembly is mounted for rotation within a chamber in the housing. The rotary assembly consists of a vaned impeller that is disposed to confront a generally cylindrical impact surface in the housing chamber, and a rotor member that is secured below the impeller and that has a surface that is disposed in spaced relationship to the confronting surface of the housing chamber. These confronting surfaces define an annulus therebetween. In operation of the equipment for processing material including kernels of cereal or seeds, the material is fed into a central portion of the impeller, accelerated by the impeller radially outwardly within the chamber to engage against the impact surface and to move along it, and then is immediately passed downward through the annular passage in a generally helical path. For dehulling, the material is subjected to progressively milder abrading action as it passes through the annular passage, and then is discharged from the machine. For degerminating, the material is subjected to a series of impacts as it passes through the annular passage.
