A compound prepared from the extract of Xanthium strumarium (cockleburr) characterized by being a white crystalline glycoside having a decomposition point of 278.degree.-279.degree.C.; a molecular formula of C.sub.31 H.sub.48 O.sub.24 S.sub.2, the aglycone portion of the molecule having a molecular formula of C.sub.19 H.sub.28 O.sub.4 ; substantially no ultraviolet absorption above 200 m.mu.; infrared spectrum showing hydrogen bonded OH absorption, 3440 cm.sup.-.sup.1 ; C--H stretch, 2940 cm.sup.-.sup.1 ; carbonyl stretch, 1735 cm.sup.-.sup.1 ; C--O stretch, 1250 cm.sup.-.sup.1 ; and other absorptions at 1640; 1460; 1380; 1040; 1000; 900; and 800 cm.sup.-.sup.1 ; a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum in deuterium oxide showing a broad absorption at 304, 230, 162, 134, 92 and 58 cps relative to external tetramethylsilane standard; and the mass spectrum of the silylated derivative gives a mass fragment of 952 amu. Hypoglycemic compositions consisting essentially of the foregoing described compound prepared from cockleburrs in admixture with a non-toxic, pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier. A method of reducing blood sugar levels in animals comprising administering a therapeutically effective concentration of the inventive compound in a pharmaceutically suitable carrier intravenously, orally, intraperitoneally and intramuscularly. The method of preparing a hypoglycemic pharmacologically active therapeutic compound from cockleburrs (Xanthium strumarium). |

THE INVENTION PROVIDES A PROCESS FOR EXTRACTING ARNICA MONTANA, IN WICH THE PLANT IS EXTRACTED WITH AT LEAST ONE SOLVENT CHOSEN FROM PETROLEUM ETHER, DIETHYL ETHER, ACETONE, CCLOROFRM, ETHANOL, WATER AND THEIR MIXTURES, THE RESULTING FILTRATE OR FILTRATES ARE TREATED WITH METHANOL, AND POLAR SUBSTANCES ARE REMOVED BY FILTRATION AFTER TREATMENT OF THE SOLUTION OBTAINED WITH ETHYL ACETATE. THE EXTRACT SO OBTAINED HAS ACITVITY IN PREVENTING THE COAGULATION OF BLOOD.
