9 METHODS FOR ENSURING THE SAFETY OF A WHEELCHAIR PASSENGER IN A TRANSPORT VEHICLE US13619257 2012-09-14 US20130088348A1 2013-04-11 Ton Verachtert
A method for ensuring the safety of a wheelchair passenger in a transport vehicle is disclosed. The method ensures that the wheelchair is blocked from moving by fixating the wheelchair to the vehicle floor and ensures that the wheelchair passenger is secured in his wheelchair by a safety-belt system. Prior to transport the method includes sensing if the wheelchair is correctly fixed to the vehicle floor and sensing if the safety-belt system is applied correctly. In a second aspect, a method for ensuring the safety of a wheelchair passenger in a transport vehicle is provided, by instructing the operator of the securing procedure to be followed. The safety of a wheelchair passenger in a vehicle is ensured by allowing the wheelchair user to indicate his status of safety.

A lifting device for a vehicle comprises a rail chassis which can be fitted transversely across the vehicle in a luggage compartment underneath a load deck of a vehicle, and a carriage assembly which extends outwardly of the vehicle, along the chassis, the carriage assembly comprising an inner frame and an outer frame which operate telescopically in a vertical direction, to carry a load platform between a raised and lowered position, in which at lower position the load platform is at ground level, and in which at raised position, the load platform is at a same level as a passenger deck of the vehicle. The lifting device saves space, due to its vertical installation in a luggage compartment underneath a passenger deck, and is easily installed by fitment directly to the floor of the luggage compartment of the vehicle.

A wheelchair lift assembly having first and second attachment arm assemblies (26a and 26b) is disclosed. The first and second attachment arm assemblies extend between a reciprocating platform (24) and a lift platform (28). The lift platform is movable between at least a raised position and a lowered position. The lift platform being held in a substantially horizontal first plane as the lift platform is moved between at least the raised and lowered positions. A support device (20) coupled to one of the first and second attachment arm assemblies for supporting one of the first and second attachment arm assemblies and maintaining the lift platform in a second plane substantially parallel to the first plane if at least a portion of the other of the first and second attachment arm assemblies fail.
14 Automatic mechanism for wheelchair lift passenger access door US09765051 2001-01-16 US20010049908A1 2001-12-13 Alan R. Cohn; Curtis J. Simon
An automatic door reciprocating system (20) is disclosed. The automatic reciprocating system is adapted for use with a wheelchair lift (152) designed to be stowed in a lower compartment of a vehicle (24). The vehicle includes a floor and a sliding door (22) where the sliding door is slidable between open and closed positions. The wheelchair lift includes a platform that is movable between an upper position, where the platform is substantially coplanar with the floor, and a lower position. The automatic door reciprocating system includes a reciprocating assembly (26) for automatically reciprocating the sliding door between the opened and closed positions.
15 Multi-panel platform rollstops for wheelchair lift US09293075 1999-04-16 US06305897B1 2001-10-23 Alfred L. Budd; Jacques M. Dulin; Ronald W. Goodrich; Russell G. Antrim
Multipanel rollstops mountable on the outboard end of a wheelchair lift platform in which at least one upper panel of the rollstop folds down or telescopes to reduce the rollstop profile for stowage. Preferred embodiments include bifold, trifold or telescoping rollstops for underfloor or under vehicle lifts. In the extended multipanel position, rollstops of the invention provide increased rollstop height and occupant security in the intermediate and transfer positions of the lift as compared to non-folding or telescoping rollstops of the same stowage profile. The folding of telescoping of the rollstop is automatic upon lift stowage. In a preferred embodiment, the rollstop upper panel is folded or unfolded by a direction-reversing mechanical actuator through a contact arm which engages structure of the lift or stowage compartment, and operates automatically without requiring operator intervention. In the unfolded, deployed safety barrier configuration the top edge of the rollstops of the invention extend at least 7″ above the platform, which is the critical minimum to stop a runaway wheelchair event.
16 Wheelchair lift with improved outer, inner, and side barriers US191463 1998-11-12 US6095747A 2000-08-01 Alan Cohn
A platform-type wheelchair lift for mounting in the stairwell of a vehicle, such as a bus or train. The wheelchair lift includes a platform frame that is movable from a retracted position in which it is stowed underneath the vehicle to an extended position in which it extends out from the side or back of the vehicle. A wheelchair platform is movably coupled to the platform frame by a parallelogram linkage that allows the wheelchair platform to move between a lowered and a raised position. The wheelchair platform includes foldable outer, side, and inner wheelchair barriers that prevent a wheelchair from moving off of the wheelchair platform during operation of the wheelchair lift. The outer and inner wheelchair barriers are capable of absorbing part of the energy of an impact between a wheelchair and the barriers and in ways cause barriers to fold out.
17 Movable ramp assembly US395556 1995-02-27 US5636399A 1997-06-10 Jules M. Tremblay; Percy Fretwell; Stanton D. Saucier
A movable ramp assembly is provided that can be securely stored and safely and reliably operated. The ramp assembly includes a platform that is conveniently stored to travel with a vehicle and deployed in a motion pattern to allow the passage of passengers across the platform into and out of the vehicle. The motion pattern includes an upwardly inclined motion and a downwardly inclined motion which together accommodate most uneven terrain on which the vehicle may be parked. In the disclosed embodiment, the motion pattern of the platform is faciliated by cam guides formed within side beams of a mounting structure and cam followers provided on bracket arms supporting the platform at one end. As the cam followers follow the cam guides, the platform is pitched upwardly at an incline and then downwardly at an incline when the platform is deployed from storage. As part of the top panel of the mounting structure, a hinged panel is provided, having multiple functions. In the disclosed embodiment, the hinged panel is substantially horizontal when the platform is stored so as to serve as part of the operating passenger floor with the top panel. When the platform is deployed; however, the hinged panel is inclined downwardly to abut a threshold section of the platform at its free end, thereby bridging the platform and the top panel to form an extended ramp surface.
18 Combined stairs and person hoist US360848 1994-12-23 US5632357A 1997-05-27 Vigbj.o slashed.rn Matre
A combined stairway and hoist so constructed that it can be adapted in many fields of use, especially for handicapped people in buildings and public transportation. The stairway together with the platform can be raised and lowered by means of parallel stays which at one end are pivotally connected to a support at the upper end of the stairway, the parallel stays along their length being pivotally connected to a number of additional stays which are connected to respective steps and are vertical in operating position.
