PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To conveniently discriminate a trouble of cable from a trouble of Raman pumping light. SOLUTION: A pumping LD 22 generates a Raman pumping light of wavelength λp being fed through an optical circulator 20 to an optical fiber 12. A light receiving unit 24 monitors output power of the pumping LD 22. An optical demultiplexer 26 feeds the light entering an optical repeater 14 from the optical fiber 12, substantially entirely, to an optical isolator 28 and feeds the remainder to an optical demultiplexer 30. The optical demultiplexer 30 separates an input light into an optical signal Sa component and a component of wavelength λp. Light receiving units 32 and 34 convert the signal light component and the component of wavelength λp separated by means of the optical demultiplexer 30 into electric signals. A comparator 36 compares the outputs from the light receiving units 32 and 34 with a normal level stored in a storage 38 and judges presence and cause of a trouble in Raman amplification on the optical fiber 12.
