121 Thermally actuated variable-rating circuit breaker having selectively connectable heater elements US648204 1984-09-07 US4570143A 1986-02-11 Robert B. Bridges; John R. Brubaker; Jerome K. Hastings
A pair of heaters (16,18) are mounted within a breaker housing (2) in spaced relation to a temperature responsive actuator element (30) for indirectly heating that element in response to current flow in the heaters. Each heater is provided with a wiring terminal member (6,8) for selectively individually connecting one or the other heater in circuit with a branch circuit to be protected. One heater (16) is selected to generate greater amounts of heat than the other heater (18) when subjected to the same current levels. The heaters are individually selectively connected in the branch circuit to be protected whereby the heater (16) producing greater amounts of heat may be utilized in a lower ampere rate application and the heater (18) producing lesser amounts of heat may be utilized in a higher ampere rated application, thereby to selectively permit predetermined current flows in the branch circuit for heating the actuator element (30) to its predetermined temperture to effect separation of the circuit breakers contacts (26).
122 Trip interlock for static trip circuit breakers US130320 1980-03-14 US4300110A 1981-11-10 Eric W. Bayer; Edward A. Palmisano
A static trip unit is comprised of a current transformer module and an electronic programmer module physically and electrically mated together for incorporation in a molded case industrial circuit breaker. Current transformer modules and programmer modules are separately interchangeable to change breaker current ratings and functional capabilities. A trip interlock is included to prevent breaker closure in the absence of either the trip unit or the trip solenoid.
123 Circuit breaker having an electronic fault sensing and trip initiating unit US886691 1978-03-15 US4209817A 1980-06-24 James P. McGinnis
A circuit breaker having an electronic fault sensing and trip initiating unit which provides increased versatility and ability to coordinate the circuit breaker with other interrupting and protective devices in a wide variety of electrical distribution systems. Electronic circuits and components are provided to vary to ampere rating of the breaker, to adjust current carrying capacity, to provide a long time delay trip, a short time delay trip and an instantaneous trip depending on the amplitude of high fault currents, to provide a ground fault trip, to shorten or lengthen the trip time for short time delay faults and for ground faults, and to provide shunt trip capability. The tripping mechanism is magnetic and mechanical, and includes a plunger movable between a trip and non-trip position controlled by an electronic switch in the electronic circuitry, and a toggle mechanism which is unlatched by the plunger when it moves to the trip position. A bimetal trip mechanism is provided as back-up protection if the ambient temperature not sensed by the electronic circuitry exceeds a pre-determined level.
124 Multiple capacity circuit breaker US867712 1978-01-09 US4187482A 1980-02-05 Russell R. Kosup
A circuit breaker including an overload trip mechanism having a current sensitive element forming a first load current conductive path. The trip mechanism is activated in response to a predetermined level of current through the trip current path. A multiple pole switch unit selectively connects a plurality of shunt load current conductive paths of various resistance values in parallel with the trip current path. The switch is operated by a cam member externally insertable into the circuit breaker in any one of a plurality of camming positions which set the switch unit to provide selected shunt current paths. Removing of the cam from the circuit breaker activates an interlock for automatically tripping the breaker. An alternative embodiment is presented wherein a contact switch unit connects, through a selectable resistance element, a shunt load current conductive path in parallel with the trip current path. The contact switch is activated by a resistance element externally insertable into the circuit breaker. Selection of the resistance element modifies the resistance of the current path in shunt with the current sensitive element to change the current rating of the breaker.
125 Circuit interrupter with interlocked removable trip unit US853983 1977-11-23 US4181906A 1980-01-01 Joseph J. Matsko; Emroy W. Lange; Paul Skalka
A circuit interrupter is provided with a trip unit removably inserted into the housing of circuit interrupter through the cover thereof. The trip unit is secured to the housing by spring clips mounted therein cooperating with recesses in the enclosure of the trip unit to permit insertion of the trip unit with the cover installed but preventing removal of the trip unit without prior removal of the circuit interrupter cover.
126 Circuit breaker with replaceable rating adjuster and interlock means US32797273 1973-01-30 US3826951A 1974-07-30 MATER A; SHIMP A
An improved circuit breaker comprises an externally accessible plug-in type replaceable rating adjuster removably supported on the housing of the circuit breaker. The rating adjuster comprises resistor means having a first resistance value. The plug-in rating adjuster can be removed and replaced by another plug-in rating adjuster comprising resistor means having a different resistance value to thereby enable a rating change of the circuit breaker in the field. Interlock means is provided to automatically trip the circuit breaker if the circuit breaker is closed when the rating adjuster is removed and to maintain the circuit breaker in a tripped condition so long as the rating adjuster is removed to thereby prevent operation of the circuit interrupter while the rating adjuster is removed. Keying means prevents the mounting of an improper rating adjuster on the breaker.
127 Electrical circuit breaker with multicurrent rating and improved operating means US3560899D 1968-11-18 US3560899A 1971-02-02 CHABOT FERDINAND E
THIS CIRCUIT BREAKER IS A MOLED CASE, MULTI-POLE CIRCUIT BREAKER OF WHICH EACH POLE HAS ITS INDIVIDUAL TOGGLE MECHANISM FOR CLOSURE AND RELEASE. THESE MECHANISMS ARE OPERABLE BY A COMMON OPERATING HANDLE SO AS TO CAUSE ALL OF THE POLES TO CLOSE SIMULTANEOUSLY. EACH TOGGLE MECHANISM IS SPRING BIASED IN THE OPENING DIRECTION, BUT IS LATCHED IN POLE CLOSING POSITION BY A HIGH MAGNETIC RELEASE WHICH RELEASES INSTANTANEOUSLY IN EVENT OF A HIGH CURRENT SHORT CIRCUIT, BY A LOW MAGNETIC RELEASE WHICH RELEASES AT THE END OF A SLIGHTLY LONGER INTERVAL, SUCH AS IN EVENT OF A TEMPORARY HEAVY OVERLOAD, AND BY A THERMAL RELEASE WHICH RELEASES AT THE END OF A SOMEWHAT LONGER INTERVAL DUE TO THERMAL EFFECTS CREATED BY LONGER SUSTAINED, BUT LESSER, OVERLOADS. THE HIGH MAGNETIC RELEASE OF EACH POLE OPERATES IN BYPASSING RELATION TO PARTS OF THE ASSOCIATED TOGGLE MECHANISM AND TO THE OTHER RELEASES FOR QUICKER RELEASING ACTION. THE LOW MAGNETIC RELEASE IS ADJUSTABLE FOR RELEASING IN RESPONSE TO PRESELECTED FLUX INTENSITIES. TRANSFORMERS SUPPLY SECONDARY CURRENT FOR OPERATING THE THERMAL RELEASES FOR THE POLES, RESPECTIVELY. THE AIR GAPS IN THE MAGNETIC FLUX PATH OF EACH TRANSFORMER CAN BE CHANGED READILY BY REMOVABLE RATING COLUMNS TO ASSURE SUBSTANTIALLY THE SAME SECONDARY CURRENT FOR ANY SELECTED PRIMARY CURRENT WITHIN THE RATED CAPACITY OF THE CIRCUIT BREAKER.

THE TERMINAL STRAP OF EACH POLE ACTS AS THE PRIMARY FOR CREATING THE OPERATING FLUXES. MEANS COMMON TO ALL OF THE POLE MECHANISMS ASSURE CONCURRENT RELEASE OF ALL TOGGLE MECHANISMS INSTANTLY UPON RELEASE OF ANY ONE OF THEM. SPECIFIC SAFELY FEATURES ARE ALSO PRESENT.
