An improved rotary direction detecting sensor to be used for a vehicle. It includes a stationary member including a cylindrical extension, a movable member fitted on a rotor and rotatable in the same direction associated with the rotor, the rotor being rotatably fitted to the stationary member on its cylindrical extension, while the stationary member is kept unrotatable irrespective of the rotation of the rotor, and a follower member interposed between the stationary member and the movable member. The follower member has a cut-out engaged with a corresponding projection formed on the movable member to delay the rotation of the follower member for a predetermined angle with respect to the rotation of the movable member. Both the movable member and follower member are provided with separate connecting contacts, while the stationary member is provided with a group of contacts selectively contacted by the connecting contacts depending on the rotary direction of the rotor. |

A switch mechanism senses the rotational direction of a rotating member so that reversal of direction acts through a control switch to energize or de-energize an electric circuit. The mechanism has a reciprocable switch actuator frictionally engaging the rotating member, whereby rotation of the rotating member in one direction pulls the actuator and rotation in the other direction pushes the actuator to operate the control switch. The rotating member may be a shaft, or it may be an idler wheel driven by the shaft, so that the rotational direction of the shaft is sensed and actuates the control switch. Herein, the switch mechanism senses the rotational direction of an output shaft in an escalator drive train. Accidental loss of motor torque when the escalator is in the "up" mode may permit reverse rotation of the output shaft as the escalator starts down under the weight of the passengers, but actuation of the control switch drops the up direction contactor and sets a brake. |

A rim-driven wheel engages a rotatable vehicle steering member. Motion is amplified by a planetary bearing assembly and applied to a lever arm through a clutch assembly. The free end of the arm carries a magnet that actuates magnetically actuated reed switches that are located adjacent to arm stops. Clockwise rotation of the steering member results in closure of one-reed switch; counterclockwise rotation results in closure of the other reed switch.
