126 | A switch assembly | EP92311484.7 | 1992-12-16 | EP0551745A3 | 1993-10-27 | Green, Terence William |
In the field of tilt switches and shock sensors, it is known to provide a switch comprising a sealed chamber containing two switch terminals and a pool of mercury. On moving of the switch as a result of tilting or the application of an impulse, the mercury moves to close or open a circuit as desired. Such devices have disadvantages arising from the toxity of mercury. The disclosure relates to a switch assembly in which a magnet (26) is mounted for movement in the vicinity of a reed switch (20). A weight (29) is moveable in a direction generally perpendicular to the magnet (26), and is connected thereto by a mechanism (16;38,39,40;44) which translates the movement of the weight to movement of the magnet. The magnet (26) and reed switch (20) are configured so that the reed switch actuates on movement of the magnet. The advantage of the invention is that tilt switches and shock sensors can be constructed without the need for mercury. |

130 | Motion detector | EP89104241.8 | 1989-03-10 | EP0343328A3 | 1990-10-31 | Maples, David Taylor |
A motion detector (10) particularly adapted for use with the transmitter of a motor vehicle keyless entry system. The motion detector (10) causes the transmitter device carried by the user to transmit a coded signal when it is in motion, for example, as it is being carried by a user toward the vehicle. The motion detector includes a spool (12) surrounded by and electrically insulated from a shell (14). A ball (16) is positioned in the annular cavity around the spool (12). Associated electronics are provided to sense a change in state of the motion detector as an indication of motion. Changes of state of the motion detector occur when the ball (16) moves into and out of direct contact with the spool (12) or shell (14) and further as the ball (16) rolls around the annular cavity while being supported by both the spool (12) and shell (14) caused by surface roughness of the interface surfaces. |

0 There is proposed a tilt sensor in which a permanent magnet having a surface coated with a magnetic fluid is housed in a hollow portion of a nonmagnetic case, and a magnetic sensing element is disposed outside a bottom portion of the case, When the case is tilted at an angle exceeding a predetermined angle, the permanent magnet is greatly moved and the magnetic sensing element detects the movement of the magnet. Furthermore, adverse influences due to magnetic attraction between the permanent magnet and the magnetic sensing element or a surface tension of the magnetic fluid are compensated. |

@ A moulded cup-shaped insulator (19) and a cup-shaped conductor (26) are pressed together in telescoping relationship at an interference fit, whereby the two cup-shaped members comprise an integral dimensionally stable sealed enclosure for a contact member (28) movable axially therein for selectively making or breaking an electrical connection between the cup shaped conductor and a second conductor (22) extending axially through and sealed within the base (21) of the cup-shaped insulator. The axially outer surfaces of the base of the cup-shaped insulator and the second conductor comprise electrical contacts for a gravity-actuated switch adapted to be selectively and releasably confined between a pair of axially spaced contacts within a container for the switch. The overall axial dimension between the axially outer surfaces is preselected without recourse to close axial tolerances in the fabrication of the cup-shaped members, merely by telescoping the cup-shaped members coaxially together until the preselected axial dimension is obtained. In one embodiment the cup-shaped insulator has a cylindrical base and a coaxial diametrically reduced cylindrical portion extending from the base to an upper opening. The conductor is telescoped over the diametrically reduced portion in fluid sealing relationship, whereby said enclosure has an interior cylindrical surface of optimum diameter for the axially movable contact member comprising a metallic ball also of optimum diameter for any given size switch. |
