The switching apparatus and the method are for varying the impedance of a phase line of a segment of an electrical power line. The phase line includes n conductors electrically insulated from each other and short-circuited together at two ends of the segment. The apparatus comprises a controllable interrupter connected in series for each conductor; a parameter detector; a first controller for controlling the interrupters; and a disabling unit for disabling the interrupters. The disabling unit comprises n controllable switches associated with the interrupters, position detectors for detecting which of the interrupters is closed, and a second controller having a command output to command the controllable switches and ensure that, at all operating times, at least one of the interrupters is closed and disabled. |

An electrical protection assembly has a pin insulator to define a first mounting structure, a fixed arm proximate an operatively upper end of the pin insulator, and an insulator arm extending from an operatively lower end of the pin insulator, with a proximate end of the insulator arm being removably securable to the pin insulator, and a first rocker arm pivotally mounted relative to the fixed arm. The first rocker arm terminates at a first end and a second end, with a fusible device being supportable between the first end of the first rocker arm and a distal end of the insulator arm, to define a fuse carrier section, and with a voltage surge protection unit being supportable between the second end of the first rocker arm and the operatively lower end of the pin insulator, to define an over voltage protection section. |

There is provided a method for determining an abnormality during operation of a high voltage disconnect switch, the method comprising: determining a current position of an arm of the high voltage disconnect switch operatively connected to a motor, the motor being operated for driving the arm of the high voltage disconnect switch; determining a torque of the motor corresponding to the current position of the arm; comparing the torque of the motor to a torque threshold for the current position of the arm; and outputting an abnormality signal based on the comparison. |

An outdoor grounding section switch has a female contact and a male contact at the end of a grounding blade that can be driven. The female contact is constituted by at least one hollow tubular thimble (11, 15), housed inside a vertical tubular insulator (3) that is closed at its top end and open at a bottom end. The male contact (25) is a vertical cylinder penetrating into the insulator (3) and the thimble during closing. The open end of the insulator (3) is equipped with a metal part (14), the inside of which is provided with a plurality of radially-directed lugs (14A), facing the periphery of the male contact vertical cylinder and stopping short of the vertical cylinder to break ice accumulating off the end of the male contact during section switch closure. A quick-break vacuum switch is connected in parallel with the ends of the thimble (11, 15) controlled by the displacement of the section switch male contact through an over center, quick-break mechanism so that the quick-break vacuum switch opens after the male and female contacts of the section switch separate from each other by an isolation distance. |

This telescopic isolating switch is made from nestable tubular members (10, 11', 12') including a base member (10) connected to an electrical connection point, intermediate members (11', 12'), and an end member supporting an electrical contact. Each intermediate member (11', 12') contains two pulley wheels (110, 111) fixed close to respective ends thereof, together with an endless loop (114) passing over the two pulley wheels (110, 111) inside the member and attached at two diametrically opposite points (116, 117) to the ends of the two adjacent members (10, 12'). The lower pulley wheel (110) of the intermediate member (11') which is adjacent to the base member (10) being driven through the base member (10) by means of a gear system slidingly engaged on a rotary fluted shaft (104) which is fixed inside the base member (10) and which is driven by a drive motor. |
