PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a keypad provided with a key having a key main body and a three-dimensional character. SOLUTION: A female mold corresponding to the key and a male mold having the three-dimensional character are utilized. A light-colored transparent material is made for the key body with reserved space for the three-dimensional character. The female mold having the key body is then combined with another male mold. A dark-colored material is injected into the reserved space of the key body to form the three-dimensional character in the key body. By applying the color contrast between the textures of the key body and the three- dimensional character, the three-dimensional character can be shown in the key body.

In an office machine keyboard comprising a plurality of keys formed by an array of areas of layer of elastic material, each key is provided with an identifying character in relief on an insert. The insert is embedded in the elastic layer so that the character is visible on the fingering surface of the layer, is surrounded by the material of the elastic layer and contrasts in color with the material. The insert is provided with internal passages. The elastic material engaging the internal passages forms struts interlocking the inserts in the elastic layer.

28 ENHANCING KEYCAP LEGEND VISIBILITY WITH OPTICAL COMPONENTS EP11839000.4 2011-12-16 EP2656180A2 2013-10-30 MAHOWALD, Peter H.; MOLLER, Ronald J.; HANKEY, M. Evans; ANDRE, Bart K.; DIONELLO, Rafael
Techniques and apparatus to provide improved visibility to user input devices, such as keys, are disclosed. In low light conditions, key legends can be difficult to distinguish. For example, often keys have legends on them to visually distinguish them from one another, but in low light conditions it can be difficult for users to visually identify the different keys. The legends can be textual and/or graphic. Hence, according to one embodiment, light from a nearby (e.g., attached) display device can be used to provide illumination to the user input devices (e.g., keys). The user input devices can be configured to include reflective optical components to enhance reflection of light and thereby improve visibility of the keys or the legends thereon.

30 Manufacturing method for key tops EP96116259.1 1996-10-10 EP0772213A1 1997-05-07 Yajima, Hiroshi, Fujipolymertech Co., Ltd.; Kashino, Masayuki, Fujipolymertech Co., Ltd.; Tsuji, Akihiro, Fujipolymertech Co., Ltd.; Nakajo, Masaru, Fujipolymertech Co., Ltd.; Yamauchi, Motoshi, Fujipolymertech Co., Ltd.; Oji, Nobuaki, Fujipolymertech Co., Ltd.

A manufacturing method for key tops comprising the steps of molding a light-shielding film (2) on a to-be-peeled shield (1) by a plane printing, effecting a colored printing (3) a readout part at a predetermined position on it in the state of a plane sheet prior to the 3-D molding, then sucking a printed light-shield film sheet (5) on a metal mold (6) with evacuation system, adsorbing said light-shield film sheet onto the wall face in the metal mold (6), at this time it may use a push mold with suction system so as to be positioned in the female mold, further putting materials such as silicone into this metal mold for one-piece molding and effecting a laser processing on the surface of a key top prepared in a 3-D shape to form a desired pattern (18). Thus the present invention by making the light-shield printing and pattern printing in the state of a plane sheet prior to the 3-D molding and effecting only a pattern processing by laser cut in the state of a stereographic shape, the present invention has omitted a laborious coating, improved the accuracy of printing and at the same time reduced the number of steps in manufacture greatly. Further, since printing is made in the state of a plane sheet, the degree of difficulty greatly differs and the accuracy of printing is raised as compared with a printing made after the 3-D molding. In addition, it becomes possible to previously effect a printing on a groove (9) between individual key faces on which no printing can be carried out after molding. Because a processing by printing, not by coating, can be made, no need for a large space, absence of inferiority due to the adherence of dust and no contamination arising from the scatter of ink in the case of coating are seen and moreover a uniform printing even on sides and gaps is attainable. And the process of manufacture can be greatly shortened.
