This invention relates to the use of a foamed polymeric material in the fabrication of solid-bodied, stringed musical instruments with the preferred material being a homogeneous body of foamed polystyrene having a density of from about 0.5 to about 6 pounds per cubic feet. Since the neck assembly must of necessity have greater structural strength than the body, it is contemplated using a relatively simple disconnect mechanism for coupling same to the body. Although the essence of the invention lies in the fact that with the foamed solid body additional sounding amplification means are unnecessary, electrical amplification can optionally be added to said instruments. |

A stringed musical device for teaching purposes in which a sound chamber is provided with an aperture therein; a plurality of longitudinally extending spaced-apart strings are maintained in tension over the aperture. A finger board is removably stored in the sound chamber and in use is positioned intermediate the strings and the surface of the sound chamber to enable left-hand practice. The sound chamber may be utilized for right-hand practice without the finger board or with the finger board in the storage position thereof. |

A stringed musical instrument that can be played in a manner similar to a piano or organ and yet sounds like a guitar. It includes a plurality of string sets extending between and across a pair of string bridges that are mounted on and extend transversely of the instrument body, each string set constituting an octave and being disposed laterally adjacent on the body. Each string set includes a single string that is reversely looped and mounted so that each side of the string can be individually tensioned to provide a different pitch. A plurality of manually operated slide bars are provided, each slide bar extending across and slidably engaging the strings of one string set to achieve selectively the key for the associated string set. Finger-actuating elements are operatively connected to a plurality of string strikers mounted for selectively strinking the strings, the finger-actuating elements selectively moving the string strikers into engagement with the strings. Each string striker is a resilient spring strip having one end attached to the body and an opposite free movable end disposed in an initial position spaced from yet adjacent to one of the strings. A finger-actuated element is operatively engageable with each spring strip to move the free strip end under spring loading into striking engagement with the string. |

A musical instrument formed from an empty five-gallon gasoline can and an upstanding neck with a steeply sloping fingerboard. The gasoline can is of the conventional flat-sided type, with a pouring opening and handle on top, used to carry gasoline on Jeeps and other vehicles, and rests on one of a pair of parallel sides to form the base of the instrument. The upstanding neck has a lower leg which is secured to the can to extend vertically upwardly adjacent its handle and beyond its upwardly facing side. The fingerboard is disposed above the gasoline can and extends for about three feet from a lower end spaced above the can to an upper end offset from the lower end toward the edge of the can. The instrument has a single string which is knotted at its lower end and passes upwardly through an opening in the upwardly facing side of the can to a twisting peg mounted in the upstanding neck just above the fingerboard. The string is positioned so that it can be depressed to the fingerboard by hand for instrument playing purposes. The leg and fingerboard parts of the upstanding neck are joined by a web having a saddle-shaped upper side on which one can lean, place a foot, or sit, while playing the instrument. Associated with the gasoline can is a foot pedal which actuates a striker bar pivotally mounted inside the can to produce a percussive effect.
