A bolt for a firearm is provided herein, the bolt having: an extractor pivotally mounted to the bolt for movement between at least a first position and a second position, the extractor having a hook member located at a distal end of the extractor, wherein the hook member is at least partially received within a pocket on a muzzle end of the bolt and the hook member moves away from a center line of the bolt as the hook member is moved from the first position towards the second position, wherein a bottom of the pocket is recessed at least a first dimension within a first range A that is greater than 0.130 inches and less than 0.200 inches in a first direction from the muzzle end of the bolt and the hook member has an axial thickness parallel to the center line of the bolt within a first range A that is greater than 0.050 inches and less than 0.130 inches and wherein the hook member is flush with the muzzle end of the bolt when the hook member is in the second position.

The invention relates to a small arm having a locked breech. Said breech comprises a bolt head (11; 111) and a bolt head carrier (13; 113), whereby the bolt head (11; 111) is passed through by a locking block (25; 125), which can move transversal to the direction of motion of the breech and which interlocks with locking projections over a large area when in the locking position. The invention also relates to the breech itself for this small arm.

Machine gun comprising a barrel (6) firmly mounted in a housing (4) and a locking unit (50) guided so as to move in the housing, said unit being preloaded by a pressure spring (52) into its extreme forward position and movable into its extreme rear position by compressed gas. The locking unit (50) is designed with an L-shape having a locking arm (56) behind the barrel (6) and a compensation arm (54) located above the barrel. The force of the spring (52) in contact with the mass of the locking unit (50) is calculated so as to limit its return travel to a shorter distance and the free length of the compensation arm (54). The mass of the locking arm (56) and that of the compensation arm (54) are matched to one another so that the center of mass of the locking unit (50) is located in the region of the intersection line between the front face of the locking bar (56) and the lower face of the compensation arm (54).
