Various implementations of a bite block allow a user safer access to an animal's teeth by holding the animal's jaw open and allowing the user to stabilize the bite block and the animal's jaw simultaneously with one hand. For example, the bite block may include a thumb receiving portion and a bite receiving portion. The thumb receiving portion defines a hole that is configured for receiving a thumb of a user. The bite receiving portion includes an upper surface and a lower surface. The upper surface defines an upper trough configured for receiving one or more maxillary teeth of an animal, and the lower surface defines a lower trough configured for receiving one or more mandibular teeth of the animal. |

An animal restraining device and method provide dual capability for restraining an animal and administering medications. A first embodiment provides an administration tube connected to a body with handles which can be grasped by user to position the device either for restraining or administering medications. A second embodiment is a continuous hook-shaped member having a hollow passageway in order to introduce medications. The second embodiment is reversible to place either end of the device in the animal's mouth for restraining or administering medications, depending upon the size of the particular animal. The method of restraint includes positioning the device in the animal's mouth and applying a force to elicit a natural response by the animal which causes the animal to pause or remain motionless for a period of time while a caregiver may treat or examine the animal. |

This document discloses, among other things, an apparatus for preventing closure of an animal mouth. A harness is fitted around the neck and the lower jaw of the animal and maintains an intraoral piece at a position in the back of the mouth. It also includes a method for holding the animal's jaw open. |

A one-piece equine dental speculum having an open frame, extending from one side of a horse's mouth, across in front of the incisors to the opposite side of the mouth. Bite plates are affixed at the front of the speculum to engage the incisors when the speculum is fully inserted. Two V-shaped projections extending rearward from each end of the bite plates act as wedges to engage the incisors and force them towards the upper and lower bite plates, forcing the jaws apart. Simply, insertion requires placing the speculum frame around the horse's mouth, placing the V-shaped projections between the upper and lower incisors and pushing until the incisors are “walked” along the upper and lower surfaces of the V-shaped projections to open the jaws. Once fully inserted, the incisors are held in place at the bite plates preventing the jaws from closing. Nose and head straps hold the speculum in place in the horse's mouth. The projections are narrowly spaced to further prevent the user from inserting their hands into the opened horse's mouth, lowering the risk of injury to the user. |
