The invention relates to a flexible coupling comprising a lower assembly (10) having a spigot member (20), and an upper assembly (60) having a recess adapted to receive the spigot member, thereby allowing articulation of the upper assembly (60) with respect to the lower assembly (10) in any direction. A complementary indexing means is adapted to circumferentially align the lower assembly (10) and the upper assembly (60), and a single resilient member (65) interconnects the lower and upper assemblies, wherein the lower and upper assemblies are urged into mutual engagement against said articulation.

An apparatus for reinforcing a plurality of adjacent parallel spaced apart wooden structural members to each other. Each of the structural members extends between first and second ends and has first and second edges. The apparatus comprises a ridged member extending between first and second ends and having a length sufficient to extend between two adjacent structural members. The apparatus further comprises a socket at each of the first and second ends of the rigid member. Each socket has a central axis therethrough and is formed of a base panel and first and second side panels. The socket is adapted to engage with a socket of an adjacent rigid member so as to interlink successive rigid members across a plurality of structural members.

Improvements in material-to-material connections are provided. For example, metal-to-metal connections are improved, such as the interface connection between a dental handpiece bur tube (10) and a component such as bearing (12). At least one marking, such as a laser marking (20) is provided such that an amount of excavate material (21) is excavated from the marking (20). When a component such as a bearing (12) is positioned upon the bur tube (10), a portion of the excavate material (21) is physically impinged between the two components (10, 12) filling any spaces or gaps therebetween.

A self-attaching fastening element, such as a nut fastener (20), having a body portion (22) and an integral annular riveting barrel portion (26). The body portion includes axial grooves (48) and, in the preferred embodiment of the nut-type fastener, the body portion includes a radial flange (24) and the grooves (48) extend radially from the body portion into the flange portion (24). In the most preferred embodiment, the body portion is polygonal and the axial grooves (48) are located in the juncture of adjacent flat surfaces (40). The method of attaching the self-attaching fastening element of this invention to a panel (60) includes forming an opening in the panel coaxially aligned with the barrel portion having a diameter less than the barrel portion, driving the barrel portion (26) into the panel (60), thereby drawing a cone-shaped portion (62) in the panel (60) receiving the body portion (22), driving the body portion (22) into the cone-shaped panel portion (22), deforming the panel portion (60) into the body portion (22) and the axial grooves (48). The free end of the barrel (32) portion may be simultaneously deformed radially to form a mechanical interlock with the panel (60). Where the body portion (22) includes a radial flange (24), the flange is driven into the panel (60) and the panel is driven into the radial grooves (48), preventing relative rotation of the fastening element in the panel. |
