PURPOSE: To mount and demount a bit by disposing an insert into a ground drill and moving a cutting means between the position of installation, where the cutting means is held by the insert, and the position of recovery, where the insert is retracted for releasing the cutting means, at the position of cutting. CONSTITUTION: When bit segments 22 are exchanged, a tool 20 in a recovery mode is lowered into the drill 12, and introduced into the insert 24 and a recovery latch dog 154 is engaged. When the tool 20 is lifted slightly by a wire line 256, the insert 24 is retracted by the dog 154, and slid in a drive sub-assembly 18 while the bit segments 22 are released and clamped and shrunk by an elastic band 198. The tool 20 is further pulled up, and engagement with the insert 24 is released and made to reach a land ring 252. A mounting latch dog 138 and the dog 154 are compressed, the tool 20 is passed through the ring 252 and pulled up onto a ground surface, and the segments 22 are exchanged. Accordingly, bits and reamers for the ground drill can be mounted and demounted as they are left as they are positioned at the place of operation. COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO

The kelly bar is selectively positionable with respect to the auger so as to allow the ability to retract the pilot bit inward into the core barrel and to shorten the separation between the pilot bit and the auger.
73 Core barrel head assembly US14375094 2012-01-27 US09644439B2 2017-05-09 Paul Lambert; Patrick Salvador
A valve assembly for use in an inner tube member of a core barrel head assembly positionable within a drill string of a drilling apparatus. The piston member of the valve assembly is located between a fluid pressure communication port and a fluid flow port to hold the retracting case in an up position and the latches retracted. After an increased fluid pressure has pushed the piston member past the annular element or bushing, the piston member substantially restricts fluid flow through the bushing and allows the retracting case to move to a down position and extend the latches. If the latches are not extended due to an obstruction or misalignment, the retracting case will prevent the piston member from completely passing through the bushing, thus maintaining high fluid pressure due to the flow ports remaining closed, and indicating to the driller that the latches have not properly latched.

79 Core drilling tools with retractably lockable driven latch mechanisms US13943460 2013-07-16 US09234398B2 2016-01-12 Christopher L. Drenth; George Iondov; George Ibrahim
Implementations of the present invention include a core barrel assembly having a driven latch mechanism. The driven latch mechanism can lock the core barrel assembly axially and rotationally relative to a drill string. The driven latch mechanism can include a plurality of wedge members positioned on a plurality of driving surfaces. Rotation of the drill string can cause the plurality of wedge members to wedge between an inner diameter of the drill string and the plurality of driving surfaces, thereby rotationally locking the core barrel assembly relative to the drill string. The driven latch mechanism can further include a refracted groove adapted to lock the plurality of wedge members radially within the core barrel assembly, thereby allowing for faster travel within the drill string. Implementations of the present invention also include drilling systems including such driven latch mechanisms, and methods of retrieving a core sample using such drilling systems.
