Cuttings are removed from air drilling fluid used in an air drilling system by delivering the cuttings and air drilling fluid into an air-tight enclosure (22), decreasing the flow rate of the air through the enclosure (22) to allow the cuttings to settle and separate from the airflow and be contained within the enclosure (22). The air, substantially devoid of the cuttings, is discharged. The enclosure (22) is positioned at an angle to facilitate the discharge of the contained cuttings. Preferably, the enclosure (22) is of a size which will allow it to be transported on public highways without special movement permits, and the exhilarating equipment used may be contained within the enclosure (22) during transportation.

A generally tubular head member (52) is adapted to be extendable with respect to the rig deck (38) into engagement with the ground around the drillhole (35) for conducting a bailing air flowstream laden with drill cuttings to an enclosure (70) wherein coarse cuttings are separated from the flowstream by gravitational and inertia forces and deposited on the ground at a point remote from the drillhole. Relatively fine cuttings are conveyed from the coarse cuttings separating enclosure (70) to a filter and dust collection unit (88) to provide total collection of entrained particles utilizing inertial and impingement separation techniques. The system efficiency is such that a variable capacity suction pump on the dust collection unit (88) is required to operate at only 1.0 to 1.5 times the volumetric flow rate of bailing air injected into the drillhole.

The present disclosure provides a backflow collection system 500 and a method for reclaiming backflow from a wellbore. The backflow collection system, in one embodiment, includes a collection vessel 520 having an upper section 523 and a lower section 528, the collection vessel having a side opening 530 configured to receive backflow from an oil/gas well, as well as a discharge port 535 proximate an upper end of the upper section configured to discharge pressurized gas from the collection vessel. The backflow collection system, in this embodiment, further includes an auger 560 coupled proximate the lower section of the collection vessel, the auger configured to receive solid and liquid matter from a bottom opening in the lower section of the collection vessel, and when elevated remove at least a portion of the solid and liquid matter from the collection vessel, the collection vessel designed such that when fluid is contained therein it acts as a liquid/gas seal to prevent the pressurized gas from exiting through the bottom opening in the lower section of the collection vessel.
