86 ACTUATOR AND METHOD EP10752123.9 2010-08-11 EP2464817B1 2018-11-07 GASKIN, Keith; CLARK, George; CHAPMAN, Darren
A downhole actuator or valve for inclusion in a downhole drill string used in a well includes an obstructing member, such as a piston, moveable between: a first position and a second position; and a retaining member, such as a ball, moveable between: a retaining position which retains the obstructing member in the first position; and, a release position which does not retain the obstructing member in the first position and/or allows or causes the obstructing member to move to the second position. The retaining member is moved in use between the retaining position and release position at least in part by centrifugal forces caused by rotation of the entire drill string within which the downhole actuator/valve is included. Thus, at least some control of the actuation of the downhole actuator/valve may be afforded by rotation thereof.

An expanding or collapsing wellbore cutting apparatus e.g. milling bit 50 comprises plural elements assembled together to form a ring structure 54 oriented in a plane around a longitudinal axis. The ring structure is operable rotated by a drive shaft 52 and to be moved between expanded and collapsed conditions by movement of the elements e.g. by sliding with respect to one another in the plane in a direction tangential to a circle concentric with the ring structure as a result of an axial force being applied e.g. by conical wedge profiles 56, 76 which are slotted to engage ridges in the elements to form a splined coupling for torque transfer. Tangential movement of the elements gives a smooth circular ring without gaps. The elements may be keyed to one another for support and comprise outer grooves and ridges or teeth for removing formation material. The apparatus may be run-in collapsed and subsequently expanded or vice versa. Applications include: milling or drilling bits e.g. casing drilling bit, cutting tool, reamer or under-reamer, washover tool or hole opener.

91 ACTIVATING DEVICE FOR A DOWNHOLE TOOL EP07825416.6 2007-10-18 EP2074277B1 2017-12-20 Lee, Paul Bernard
An activating device is mounted in a drill string to control the activation and deactivation of an enlargement tool used for enlarging a bore hole. In order to assemble the activating device, pistons are mounted in passages and spline bars, in which plates are screwed, are then slid along T-slots of the body, through apertures of the pistons. In order to deploy the pistons and cutters, pressurized drilling fluid is applied to the inner faces of the pistons. When a pre-determined pressure level is reached, screws break and the pistons move from the inward position to the outwardly deployed position.
92 UNDERREAMER WITH RADIAL EXPANDABLE CUTTING BLOCKS EP15819749.1 2015-07-07 EP3167145A1 2017-05-17 SOLEM, Sigurd
A cutting tool (1) for widening the diameter of a borehole and method thereof is disclosed. The cutting tool (1) comprises a housing (2) having cavity (10) in which a moveable activation element (6) is arranged. The activation element (6) is moved in an axial direction and is connected to one or more cutting blocks via a mechanical coupling (15). The mechanical coupling (15) transfers the axial movement of the action element into a radial movement of the cutting blocks. An activation unit (24) pushes the activation element (6) towards a stopping position which in turn causes the cutting blocks (11) to move out of the housing. The activation unit (24) further pulls the activation element back towards its starting position which in turn causes the cutting blocks to move back into the housing. The cutting blocks (11) extend into one or more cavities formed in the activation element, thereby increasing the travel-to-expansion ratio. The cutting blocks can be replaced by stabiliser blades (20) which are used to stabilise the drilling in the expanded borehole.
