A hole opener (10) having a tubular body (11) with threaded ends (12, 14) for connection in a drill string. The hole opener provides slots or grooves (21, 21') along its longitudinal axis (16) into which are inserted cutter arm support members (30, 30', 60, 60') which may be screwed, (43) pinned (68) or bolted (168) to the body (11) to permit easy replacement of the support arms (30). The grooves (21, 21') in the body (11) of the hole opener (10) also provide a spindle (20) spatially aligned with the groove (21, 21') to support the proximal end of a rotatable journal body (28) supporting the cutter body (25) providing hard facing for grinding of the bore hole to be enlarged. The support arms (30) at their distal end provide further support for the cutter journals (70). The hole opener (10) also may provide pressure compensated lubrication mechanism (71) to provide grease to the bearing surfaces to increase their service life and thereby extend the useful life of the tool.

An earth-boring bit or head of the shaft or tunnel boring variety has a generally circular bit body. A plurality of saddle members are secured to bit body to receive and support each end of a plurality of corresponding journal members. A cutter shell or sleeve is mounted for rotation on bearings on each journal member. At least one kerf ring (7) is releasably secured to the cutter shell. The kerf ring includes a pair of opposing sides that converge to define a continuous crest for disintegration of formation material. A plurality of hard metal inserts (17) are embedded and secured in rows to the kerf ring, the inserts being generally flush with the sides and extending to the crest of the kerf ring.
90 | A CUTTER, A STOPPER MEANS AND A METHOD OF PREVENTING MUD FROM ENTERING INTO A CUTTER | EP96921182.0 | 1996-06-12 | EP0833999B1 | 2003-04-23 | STRAND, Göran |
The present invention relates to a cutter (10) for a raise boring head. The cutter (10) is rotatable about a center axis (14) and mounted, via a shaft (12) of the cutter (10), in a saddle secured to the raise boring head. Bearing means (18, 20) are provided between the shaft (12) and a hub (16) of the cutter (10) in order to make it possible for the hub (16) to rotate relative to the shaft (12). Sealing means (33) between the shaft (12) and the hub (16), and bore/hole means (38, 38A, 48, 50) for introducing lubrication means into the interior of the cutter (10) are provided. An expansion plug (52) is mounted in the bore means (38, 38A). The expansion plug (52) is designed to accommodate lubrication means that enters into the bore means (38, 38A) from the bearing means (18, 20). A stopper means (62) is provided in the bore means (38, 38A). The stopper means (62) encases a part of the fastening means (70) and the stopper means (62) is arranged to prevent mud from entering the orifice of the bore means (38, 38A).

The invention relates to a roller bit for tunnel-boring machines. In preart embodiment types, the entire roller base body (1) always had to be replaced due to the manner in which the bits (3) or cutting points are fastened when the bits (3) were worn out, as they were braze welded or shrink fitted to the roller base body (1). According to the invention, the bits (3) or the cutting points are inserted in a detachable manner so that they can be changed out in the body (1) which carries them. The bits or cutting points can be replaced onsite in a problem-free manner.

A device for fixing a disk cutter to the cutter head of a shield excavator, wherein a plurality of cylindrical cases (2) are provided on the face plate (1a) of the cutter head (1) rotatably disposed on the front part of the shield proper, bosses (3) are disposed to project face-to-face in each of said cases (2), U-shaped grooves (4a) of retainers (4) provided on both ends of a shaft (7) rotatably supporting the cutter proper (5) are fitted on the bosses (3) so that the cutter proper (5) is turned around the shaft (7) together with the retainer (4); a key block (10) is fixed to the open side of the U-shaped groove (4a) formed on said retainer (4); and the cutter proper (5) is fixed to the case (2) with the boss (3) clamped by the key block (10) and retainer (4). In this way, the cutter proper can be fixed to the cutter proper without forming insertion grooves in the case, the case is small in height, and thus more pieces of cutters can be fixed to the cutter head than before, whereby a fixing device simple in structure, easy to mount, and excellent in strength can be obtained.

The invention relates to a roller cutter comprising rows (41,42) of cutting means, e g hard material inserts, extending along the circumference of the cutter (16-38), said roller cutter (16-38) being reversibly mountable in a saddle (12) of a drill bit (10), the number of rows of the roller cutter being two, the rows (41,42) of cutting means being located on each side of the transverse symmetry plane (45) of the roller cutter, and the distance (B) between the first row (42) and the symmetry plane (45) being longer than the distance (A) between the second row (41) and the symmetry plane (45). The characterizing feature of the roller cutter (16-38) is that said roller cutter (16-38) is cylindrical. Preferably the distance (B) between the first row (42) and the symmetry plane (45) is essentially three times the distance (A) between the second row (41) and the symmetry plane (45). |

99 | A ROTARY CUTTERHEAD FOR AN EARTH BORING MACHINE | EP80900050.8 | 1979-08-14 | EP0034143B1 | 1986-01-15 | SPENCER, Barry Albert |
The main frame of the cutterhead (20) comprises a plurality of radial spoke beams (48) which are interconnected between a box-like hub structure (32) and an annular box beam (60) by which the cutterhead is mounted for rotation. Cutter mounting wells are defined by and between side wall portions (50, 52) of the radial spoke beams (48). The mined material passes rearwardly through the cutterhead via openings between adjacent radial spoke beams and open spaces in the cutter mounting wells. Cutter mounts (99) span laterally between the side wall portions (50, 52) and laterally brace the radial spoke beams (48) in addition to mounting the cutters (26). The radial spoke beams (48) curve rearwardly at their outer ends and connect to the annular box beam (60) at a location spaced enough rearwardly from the front portions of the spoke beams (48) such that an interior space (IS) is defined within the cutterhead. Roller type cutters (26) are installed onto and removed from the cutterhead frame from the rear side of the cutterhead.
100 | Earth boring machine cutterhead and frame | EP83111450.9 | 1979-09-19 | EP0123725A1 | 1984-11-07 | Spencer, Barry A. |
A main frame for a rotary cutterhead of an earth boring machine, has an annular beam (30) by which the cutterhead (20) is mounted onto the earth boring machine for rotation. The frame has a central hub structure (26) disposed forwardly of the annular beam (30); and connected thereto by a plurality of radial spoke beams (28). The spoke beams (28) extend rearwardly and radially outwardly form the hub structure (26) to the annular beam (30) thus making the main frame generally dome shaped. Cutters supported on the spoke beams (28) can be serviced manually from within dome-shaped frame. |
