The cutter wheel is mounted for rotation about an elongated support shaft. This subassembly is moved endwise towards a first end standard until a mounting pin on either the shaft or the end standard engages a mounting pin socket in the other. A second mounting standard is moved towards the second end of the shaft until a second mounting pin on either the shaft or the second end standard is engageable with a mounting socket formed in the other. The second end standard is bolted or otherwise detachably mounted to its support.

An earth-boring bit or head of the shaft or tunnel boring variety has a generally circular bit body. A plurality of saddle members are secured to bit body to receive and support each end of a plurality of corresponding journal members. A cutter shell or sleeve is mounted for rotation on bearings on each journal member. At least one kerf ring (7) is releasably secured to the cutter shell. The kerf ring includes a pair of opposing sides that converge to define a continuous crest for disintegration of formation material. A plurality of hard metal inserts (17) are embedded and secured in rows to the kerf ring, the inserts being generally flush with the sides and extending to the crest of the kerf ring.

The present invention relates to a cutter (10) for a raise boring head. The cutter (10) is rotatable about a center axis (14) and mounted, via a shaft (12) of the cutter (10), in a saddle secured to the raise boring head. The shaft (12) has ends (12A, 12B) that are secured to the saddle by fastening means (70). Bearing means (18, 20) are provided between the shaft (12) and a hub (16) of the cutter (10) in order to make it possible for the hub (16) to rotate relative to the shaft (12). Sealing means (33) between the shaft (12) and the hub (16), and bore/hole means (38, 38A, 48, 50) for introducing lubrication means into the interior of the cutter (10) are provided. An expansion plug (52) is mounted in the bore means (38, 38A). The expansion plug (52) is designed to accommodate lubrication means that enters into the bore means (38, 38A) from the bearing means (18, 20). A stopper means (62) is provided in the bore means (38, 38A). The stopper means (62) encases a part of the fastening means (70) and the stopper means (62) is arranged to prevent mud from entering the orifice of the bore means (38, 38A).

The present invention relates to a cutter of a boring head, and also to a hub constituting a part of the cutter, and a method of manufacturing a hub. The cutter (10; 10') is rotatably mounted in a saddle in the boring head. A roller bearing means is located between the shaft (11; 11') and the hub (18; 18') of the cutter. In order to improve the bearing capacity of the cutters, the outer races (17; 17'a, 17'b) for the rollers (15; 15'a, 15'b) of the roller bearing means, are integral with the hub. In the method of manufacturing of a hub (18; 18'), those portions of the hub which are not to be hardened are left unfinished or covered by a layer that prevents carburization. The hub can then have different properties in different portions in order to comply with tolerances and specifications.

The present invention relates to a cutter (10) for a boring head, preferably a boring head for shaft drilling, wherein the cutter (10) is rotatably mounted, via a shaft (12) of the cutter (10), in a saddle secured to the boring head. Bearings (18, 20) are provided between the shaft (12) and an outer roller body (16) of the cutter (10) to make it possible for the roller body (16) to rotate relative to the shaft (12). Seals (33) are disposed between the shaft (12) and the roller body (16) and channels/bores (38, 48, 50, 66) are provided to introduce lubrication internally into the cutter (10). The shaft (12) has a center axis (14). The invention is characterized in that a device (70) for positioning of spacer means (42, 44), a lubrication channel (66) and a diaphragm (60) are provided in the shaft (12), substantially concentrically with the center axis (14), said device, channel and reservoir being provided to accommodate lubrication. The invention further relates to a method for filling a lubrication system.
