A manifold (30) is formed within the pinion cavity (27), between the pinion (28) and the housing (25) and is further bounded by an upper seal (33) and a lower seal (34). A fuel (35) is receivable into the manifold (30), the fuel (35) conducted into the manifold (30) through a housing port (40). The housing port (40) penetrates through the housing (25) and is open to the manifold (30). The housing port (40) conducts the fuel (35) into the manifold (30). A pinion port (60) that passes through the pinion (28) conducts the fuel (35) out of the manifold (30) and to a burner (20) mounted proximate the wind machine (14). The burner (20) combusts the fuel (35) to heat the wind stream (17).

Heated liquid circulation conduits are supported in the shelters at predetermined locations and provide controlled heat during the winter months to prevent the vines and the cordon bearing spuds of the vines from damaging cold temperatures. In the early spring the roots are activated early and the tarp is removed and a transparent film sheet covering is substituted to admit sunlight to help activate the vine early to gain degree days. The method and system is also applicable to semi-rustic or rustic wine producing grape vines grown in these climatic regions having degree days down to about 1200.

Eine solche Vorrichtung zeichnet sich durch eine besonders einfache und kostengünstige Bauweise bei unkomplizierter Handhabung aus und gewährleistet einen sicheren Schutz der Pflanze gegen Frostschäden.

Un procédé permettant de maintenir la végétation au dessus des niveaux d'endommagement dû au gel consiste à entourer les racines, les tiges, les troncs ou les feuillages de la végétation avec un matériau de changement de phase ayant un point de fusion supérieur au niveau d'endommagement dû au gel, lequel matériau de changement de phase est contenu dans plusieurs sacs (10) ou dans un organe tubulaire allongé. Dans le cas d'utilisation d'un organe tubulaire allongé, il peut être enroulé directement autour de la végétation ou bien enroulé en piles (22) placées au dessus de la végétation ou déposé sous le sol en rangées circulaires définies à l'intérieur d'un pneu de voiture (24) à proximité de la végétation et servant de collecteur direct de l'énergie solaire. Un chemin de fluide est prévu au travers du centre de l'organe tubulaire qui est couplé à un collecteur solaire (34). L'énergie thermique solaire récupérée est ainsi transférée via le fluide recirculant dans ce chemin vers le matériau de changement de phase de sorte que ce dernier fond. Lorsque la température ambiante tombe en dessous des niveaux d'endommagement dû au gel, le matériau de changement de phase, en se refroidissant et en se solidifiant, libère de l'énergie thermique pour chauffer la végétation. Dans une variante, lorsque l'énergie solaire est insuffisante, le fluide de transfert est chauffé par un four (36) alimenté par un combustible. Dans le cas de l'utilisation des sacs remplis du matériau de changement de phase, ces derniers peuvent être logés dans l'espace intérieur toroïdal d'un pneu de voiture à proximité de la végétation qui récupère directement l'énergie thermique solaire laquelle est dirigée vers le matériau ensaché de changement de phase.

Um den Energieverbrauch extrem niedrig zu halten, brennen die Hauptflammen (40) nur an den Strahlern (13), und nur solange, wie dies zur Abwendung der Frostgefährdung erforderlich ist. Jedem Hauptbrenner (22) ist ein Thermostatventil (28) zugeordnet, an welchem die vom Entwicklungsstand der Kultur abhängige Gefährdungstemperatur eingestellt wird. Das Thermostatventil (28) wird über ein Kapillarrohr (35) von einem flüßigkeitsgefüllten Fühlerelement (36) gesteuert. Fällt im Bereich des Fühlerelementes (36) die Außentemperatur unter die eingestelte Gefährdungstemperatur, verringert sich das im Fühlerelement (36) befindliche Flüßigkeitsvolumen und das Thermostatventil (28) gibt den Energiefluß frei. Durch die Spar- oder Pilotflamme (32) entzündet sich die Hauptflamme (40), die so lange brennt, wie dies zur Konstanthaltung der eingestellten Gefährdungstemperatur erforderlich ist. Bei wieder ansteigender Außentemperatur dehnt sich die Flüßigkeit im Fühlerelement (36) wieder aus und schließt das Thermostatventil (28). Während nun die Hauptflamme (40) verlöscht, brennt die Spar- oder Pilotflamme (32) weiter und die Betriebsbereitschaft bleibt erhalten.
