A method and apparatus for space dyeing yarn (Y) includes a series of dye stations (12,14,16,18,20,22,24,26) each of which has a dye applicator roll (30) and a rotatable pattern roll (66) having deflecting rods (72,74) which may deflect yarn (Y) into engagement with the periphery of the respective dye applicator roll (30). Each pattern roll (66) is rotatably driven by a servo motor (76) and selectively rotated to position the deflecting rods (72,74) for permitting dyeing to occur at the respective station and to rotate the roll (66) and thus the rods (72,74) to angular dispositions where the yarn (Y) is not deflected. A programmable controller (64) controls the respective motors (76) to the selected angular positions at precise times to start and stop the application of dye to the yarn (Y). An encoder (58,60,62) associated with the yarn feed system feeds timing signals related to yarn movement to the controller (64) so that rotation of each pattern roll (66) is in timed relationship with the movement of the yarn (Y).

11 YARN COATING ASSEMBLY AND METHOD EP95922884.2 1995-05-23 EP0802833B1 2003-04-09 OLIPHANT, Larry, J.
An apparatus and method for applying coatings to yarns (13), particularly yarns (13) to be utilized as dental floss. In a preferred arrangement, an array of parallel spaced yarns (13) are continuously fed while being intermittently deflected by a cam or deflector (15). As the yarns (13) are deflected, they enter a grooved liquid applicator (12), with the grooves (12) maintaining a predetermined amount of liquid therein by capillary action. A predetermined amount of liquid is thus applied at intermittent or spaced locations along the length of the yarn (13). The method and apparatus is particularly suitable for providing dye at spaced locations along a continuous length of floss, thereby demarcating lengths suitable for individual use. Various aspects are also applicable to a variety of yarn coating and/or dyeing applications.

14 Yarn dyeing apparatus EP94109504.4 1994-06-20 EP0634513A1 1995-01-18 Haselwander, Jack G.

A method and apparatus for space dyeing a plurality of strands of yarns (Y) which are fed over a series of dye applicator rolls (56). Each roll is rotated in a partly submerged condition in a dye pan (58) containing a different color. Above and offset relative to each dye applicator roll is a yarn pattern roll (82) which carries a number of slats (100) in a circumferential array extending beyond the periphery of the pattern rolls for contacting the yarn strands. The slats sequentially engage and deflect the yarn strands onto the surface of the respective dye applicator rolls. The slats may be positioned in selected slots (98) in the pattern rolls to determine the pattern of color applied to the yarn. Variable speed drives (66, 92) rotate the dye applicator rolls and the pattern rolls independently of each other to effect the spacing of the colors and the amount of dye received by the yarn strands.

17 Apparatus for treating plaited yarns US17023 1979-03-02 US4271688A 1981-06-09 John G. Tillotson
Apparatus for treating yarn ends while plaited in unstressed condition on a conveyor belt. In different portions of a machine the treatment consists in fixing dye-stuffs printed upon the yarns and drying the yarns after fixing and subsequent washing. A pair of rolls form a nip through which the conveyor belt and the plaits thereon pass upon leaving each of the treatment means. Yarn pulling means pull the yarns from the nip and off the belt, applying tension against the reaction of the nip without applying stress to the plaits advancing toward it.
18 Method for space dyeing yarn US646352 1976-01-02 US4047271A 1977-09-13 James G. T. Paterson; Charles W. Watkins; Grover G. Duckworth, Jr.
A method for space dyeing yarn wherein a rapidly advancing yarn is intermittently deflected into and out of a nip of a pair of rotating dye applicator rollers, such that those portions of the yarn which pass through the nip are subjected to a rapidly applied and substantial compressive force in the nature of a hammer-like impact in the nip, to cause the dye carried by the rollers to deeply penetrate into the yarn. In the illustrated embodiment, the yarn is advanced past a plurality of such pairs of dye applicator rollers, and an external pattern control acts to deflect the yarn into and out of the various nips in accordance with a predetermined program.
19 Process and apparatus for the production of blends US440758 1974-02-08 US3958925A 1976-05-25 Hans Fleissner
A continuous process for the production of blends of fibers having two or more different colors which comprises passing a plurality of fiber slivers or strands of desired length together in mutually parallel relationship through at least one pair of printing rolls, and imprinting the fiber slivers or strands in one operating stage with different colorants in varying thicknesses and amounts, based on a unit length or unit area of said fiber slivers or strands.
