The invention concerns a method which consists for pieces of a specific type, for example leather pieces, in: producing a mask whereof the surface is divided into various zones corresponding to different value levels of a characteristic on the piece material, for example the colour and grain of the leather; attributing to components of a specific article to be produced a set of stresses whereof at least one value stress of a characteristic of the piece material, and defining between certain components links of different levels on the basis of the imposed relationship between the stresses attributed to the components; applying to the digitised image of each piece the or each mask corresponding to the type of the piece so as to divide the piece image into various zones with homogeneous characteristics; and performing automatic placing by arranging the components in the zones of the piece image on the basis of the stresses attributed to the components, taking into account the specific links between the components.

190 | A pattern alignment and cutting system | EP96113779.1 | 1996-08-28 | EP0762251A1 | 1997-03-12 | Clarino, Thomas N.; McFadden Altshul, Mary |
A pattern alignment system for use during the garment development process prior to the cutting operation includes a table with work surface (64). There is a digitizer located with the surface. The operator establishes a perimeter (24) of a hide or other fabric piece that has been positioned on the surface with a stylus (66) that presents position signals to a controller in real time. The controller has signals corresponding to a marker and further includes algorithms to compose the drawn lines or points into an electronic representation of the piece perimeter. Defects, textures or the like in the piece are identified in a similar manner. The system includes algorithms which enable the operator to reposition one or more garment segment patterns (12, 14) in the marker to avoid defects or otherwise optimize the segment position on the piece. |

Sheet materials in the form of optionally flawed remnants with non-repetitive shapes, e.g. hides (10), are cut by digitising the geometry of each remnant, arranging the pieces to be cut out of the remnant, and cutting pieces out of the remnant according to the resulting arrangement. The surface of the remnant (10) is provided with indicia indicating at least the position and orientation of the remnant during the digitising process. The indicia are sensed to determine and record position data representing the positions of the first indicia. In a cutting station (300), images of the indicia positioned according to the first recorded position data are projected onto a work surface, and the corresponding remnant is placed thereon so that the indicia on the remnant surface match the projected images thereof, whereafter said pieces can be cut out of the remnant which now has a position and orientation similar to those it had during the digitising process.

A method for making through holes includes bringing a leather pressing member (12) in contact with an article (21) where the holes are to be made. Then a cutting tool (7) is imparted a movement perpendicular to the surface of the article (21), so as to go out of the pressing member (12). At the same time the cutting tool (7) is also imparted a rotation. Therefore the cutting tool (7) performs a combined rotational-translation motion. |
