A locking device for a hatch (1) or similar structure, comprising a locking bolt (17), a lock cylinder (13) and a socket (22) adapted to receive a locking handle, whereby the lock cylinder (13) is mounted on the blade, or panel, of the hatch (1) and is operatively connected to the socket (22) and the locking bolt (17), said socket (22) being disposed on the outer face of the hatch (1) and said locking bolt (17) being disposed on the inner face of the hatch (1) and being adapted to engage and disengage with a striking plate (19) as a result of the manipulation of the handle. The socket (22) comprises an outer surface (22'), which basically lies within the same plane as the outer face of the hatch and further comprises an inwardly oriented recess (23) in the hatch, adapted to receive a male part, or chuck, on the handle. The inwardly oriented recess (23) is provided with a gripping edge (25) or similar surface with which a locking member on the handle chuck is engageable, for selectively retaining the handle securely in the the socket (22), thus enabling the handle to function both as a key and as handle for the hatch (1).
