PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the coefficient of friction of a magnetic recording medium, improve its durability in still playback and durability in shuttling, and cause such effects to last long by coating the magnetic layer of the medium with a carboxyl-terminated perfluoropolyether obtd. by specifying the ratio of the number of carbon atoms of the alcohol part to that of the perfluoropolyether part of an ester formed in the process for purifying the carboxyl-terminated perfluoropolyether. SOLUTION: A carboxyl-terminated perfluoropolyether contg. a perfluoropolyether not carboxylated as an impurity is subjected to esterification with a long-chain alcohol in an anhydrous toluene to give an ester. If the ratio (Nc/Nf)×100 of the number of carbon atoms of the alcohol part (Nc) to that of the perfluoropolyether part (Nf) of the ester is set to 28% or higher, the esterification product can be separated into a toluene-soluble component (an ester component) and a toluene-insoluble component (an impurity) because of the difference in solubility. The purified product is obtd. by removing toluene from the toluene-soluble component followed by the extraction with n-hexane.
