[Class 83 (i)] [See also Group XVI] Two-part moulds of the kind described in Specifications 336,187, [Class 83 (i)], and 358,811 for casting printers' type, furniture &c., are rendered adjustable by means of a slidable side-member controlled by a screw, and a vertically slidable bottom-member adapted to be clamped in position by the side-member. The mould is mounted on a hollow base-member a<1> having an inclined top, and comprises a channel-shaped member a<3>, a<4>, a<5>, in which is mounted a laterally slidable cheek b having an adjusting-screw c, which can be turned by means of a nut c<1>. The bottom of the mould is formed by a plate d, which is preferably spring-supported, and is clamped in position by the cheek b; or it may have separate clamping means. The mould is closed by an L-shaped closure-member, the part f<1> of which lies between flanges a<9> on the channel-member. An aperture f<3> in the closure-member receives a block g having a filling-trough g<2> and a handle g<1>. A percussion-stud g<3> enables excess metal to be removed from the filling-trough.

27,670. Grant, J. C., and Davis, H. Nov. 28. [Cognate Application, 1248/11.] Type-casting machines. - Relates to pivotal machines wherein finished type are delivered consecutively on to a race. The machine comprises, as usual, a swing-frame 6, Fig. 2, carrying the mould and arranged to oscillate between the metal pot 50 and the race 44, the mould being opened by means of a radius-rod 19; the matrix 4 is carried by a holder 5, which is mounted in guides 7 to travel in the direction of the axis of the mould, and is retractable by means of a lever 13. Moulds; finishing type.-The following arrangements are provided for ejecting the type and breaking the tangs. (1) The types are transferred to the race 44 by means of a pusher consisting of blades 26, 27, Fig. 3, which bear on the dot 29 and the type-projection 31. The blades are secured to a slide 28 engaging a bellcrank lever 42, which is operated by a spring pin under the control of a cam 33. (2) To prevent turning of the type, the dot 29 may be formed as shown in Fig. 9 with a rectangular or other non-circular cross-section, the blade 26 being forked to engage the dot. The dot is formed by means of a nipple-plate 64, Fig. 8, having a non-circular hole 30 for the dot, a cup 65 for the pump-nozzle, and a circular hole 66 for the jobber. The nipple-plate is preferably made from two plates riveted together. (3) To prevent turning of the thin sorts, the device shown in Fig. 19 may replace or supplement that described above. The device consists of a. strip 79, which runs on guide-rods 82, and is pressed against the type 32 by a spring 83. During the transference of the type to the race 44 by the pusher 26, 27, the strip is moved backward into the dotted-line position to engage a latch 84. This latch is released by the cam 33, which operates the pusher. (4) During the first portion of the forward pivotal movement of the mould, the type is retained in the bottom half with the tang attached by means of pins or drags 2, 3, Fig. 3, arranged in the slip or body. (5) The race 44, Fig. 14, is provided with a guide-strip 46 and a presser 45, which is adjustable for different bodies. The tangs are broken by the end 62 of a lever 55, pivoted to the race at 56, and provided with a tail 57 which is adapted to be engaged by a cam 61 on the swing-frame 6. In a modification, the tang may be broken by a plunger mounted on the race and arranged to be actuated by an arm on the shaft 49, Fig. 2, of the pump-jobber. The plunger may be provided with a file for dressing the foot of the type. The outer end of the race may carry an ordinary type-stick. Matrices.-The space and quad matrices are formed with a recess, and are used in conjunction with a mould of less height than the normal, the recess serving to provide the space or quad with a wall adapted to be engaged by the blade 27 of the pusher.

PURPOSE: To provide the titled apparatus not in danger of making finish of a printing type inferior by constituting so as to restrain a middle plate forming a casting space to its position until a cast printing type is solidified through a corner defining block. CONSTITUTION: When a printing type is cast, a middle plate 7 is cooperated with a wedge 21 located corresponding to the printing type to be cast by a middle plate operating lever 8 to form a casting space 16. By operating a cam 36 for restraining the middle plate 7, an inclined surface 27 of a wedge 28 for restraining the middle plate 7 is brought into contact with an inclined surface of a corner defining block 4 in a slidable manner and the middle plate 7 is restrained to its position through said corner defining block 4 until the cast printing type is solidified. During a time when a molten metal introduced into the casting space 16 under pressure from a running gate 18 is solidified to be molded into the printing type, the middle plate 7 can be restrained to its position.
