CONSTITUTION: To an aluminate soln. contg. excess caustic alkali are added both a Ba cpd. and a water sol. high molecular cpd. as a precipitant in an amt. of 0.02W 1.0, esp. 0.2W0.5wt% and 0.001W0.05, esp. 0.005W0.03wt% to the dry wt. of red mud suspended in the soln. The Ba cpd. may be, e.g. barium chloride, and the high molecular cpd. sodium polyacrylate. The addn. of the precipitant increases red mud settling speed and remarkably reduces the vol. of settled flocks compared to a case using a conventional precipitant. The precipitant shows an improved effect esp. in separation of red mud of goethite rich bauxite in Southeast Asia.
