CONSTITUTION: Tar pitch containing free carbon is dissolved in 1W5 times (preferably 2W2.5 times) as much an aromatic low-boiling solvent such as gas oil, etc. as the tar pitch by volume, heated at 260W320°C, pressurized at 30W60atm., materials insoluble in the solvent are separated and removed, and the solvent is further removed from the extracted oil, to give pitch containing no free carbon. The pitch is heat-treated preferably under reduced pressure or under bubbling of an inert gas at 350W450°C to give the desired pitch.
