A space 32 defined by the housing 30 and the piezoelectric element 6 is there on the side remote from the ultrasonic energy receiving surface 6a of the piezoelectric element 6, that is, on the rear surface 6b side. With the provision of the space 32, a means for shielding ultrasonic energy may be provided. Incidentally, the silicon material 31 covers not only the ultrasonic energy receiving surface 6a of the piezoelectric element 6 but also covers over the overall surface of the housing 30.
