CONSTITUTION: Magnetic heads 5A and 5B move relatively in relation to a scale 6 having divisions of a prescribed interval and first and second signals having periodic and substantially sine-wave-shaped waveforms and having a phase difference of a π/2 radian from each other are obtained at each division of the scale 6. Sine-wave high-frequency voltage signals are added to these two signals to modulate them and deviation outputs of said two signals are obtained by a differential amplifier 13. Next, the deviation signals are multiplied N times by a Nth power circuit 14 and inputted to mixing circuits 15 and 16 in a subsequent stage to be mixed. Then, the mixed signals are passed through low-pass filters 17 and 18 respectively and an output signal of a phase A and an output signal of a phase B are obtained from output terminals 19 and 20. These output signals of the phase A and the phase B have periods of 1/N of the original signals.
