CONSTITUTION: The digital image pickup information on a working area obtained by a TV camera 3 and stored in an image memory 11 is supplied via an image switch 12. Thus a differentiation processing part 20 produces the edge image information in response to the variation of lightness. The edge image information is binary coded by a binarization processing part 30 to read out the huff value of the polar coordinate value stored in a table for conversion processing where a discontinuous segment is connected to a continuous segment by the orthogonal coordinates corresponding to the binarization image information or an isolated segment is erased. Then a boundary parameter arithmetic part 50 counts the reading frequency of the same huff value and delivers the huff value having the highest reading frequency as the boundary information between a processed working area and an unprocessed working area. With use of a table storing said huff value, the huff conversion is carried out simply and at a high speed for automatic detection of the boundary.
