The laser beam spot 32A obtained on the rolled material 12 is received along with the rolled material edge image by the fiber 24 and the image pickup part 26 and the position of the spot 32A in the image is subjected to operational processing by the image processor 28 to detect the position of the rolled material in the up-and-down direction. By this method, the displacement in the up-and-down direction is calculated to correct the displacement in the lateral direction and the displacement in the lateral direction within a horizontal plane can be accurately calculated regardless of the displacement of the rolled material in the up-and-down direction.
