CONSTITUTION: When a wafer 2 shifted by a shift device 10 passes over a photosensor 11, an image pickup device 7 stores the digital picture information of the wafer 2 to a memory part 8. The 1st processing part 13 calculates the direction and position of a notch 3 from the information. In other words, a notched fringe picture element detecting part 15 finds out a noticed fringe picture element from the picture of the wafer 2 and delivers the position of the picture element. A fringe equidistance detecting part 16 finds out two fringe picture elements set at a fixed distance from the noticed fringe picture element and delivers the positions of these picture elements. A straight line discriminating part 17 delivers "genuine" when three fringe picture elements are put on a straight line. The direction and position of the notch 3 are calculated by a notch direction calculating part 19. Then the 2nd processing part 14 segments the part of a character 1 for indentification on the basis of those above-mentioned information. Thus a character having no inclination is read.
