The supernatant of the 2nd chamber 11 flows from an outflow pipe 7 into the anaerobic chamber of the 3rd chamber 12 where the sulfatereducing bacteria coexist together with the the anaerobic microorganisms. The iron ions eluted from the flat plate contact materials made of iron by the sulfate-reducing bacteria are incorporated into the sewage flowing into the 3rd chamber 13 and react with the phosphoric acid ions in the sewage to form an insoluble phosphoric iron salt. The supernatant passes an outflow pipe 2 and flows into an aerobic treatment chamber 13 to which activated sludge is supplied from a return sludge pipe 21. The sewage is thus cleaned by an activated sludge method.
