Needlelike himihydrate gypsum of 1W2μ minor axis and 10W30μ major axis is further added as a seed in an amt. of 0.3W1 part to 100 parts of gypsum. The slurry is then heated at the transition temp.Wthe b.p. under atmospheric press. to obtain prismatic or platelike α-type hemihydrate gypsum. The seed may be added in the form of a slurry or powder, yet it is pref. added when the temp. of the gypsum slurry reaches the transition temp.
