CONSTITUTION: Circulating liquid of the cooling tower 6 is partly branched from the cooling tower circulation line, and is sent via line 8 to the tank 9 for supplying liquid for the oxidation tower. Gas contg. deaerated gas of sulfurous acid is discharged from the outlet 15 of the oxidation tank, passes through line 18, and enters the tank 9, so that gas-liquid contact occurs to the liquid in the tank 9. This converts part of unreacted limestone into CaSO
3 . To remove the remaining limestone, sulfuric acid is added via line 10 to reduce pH4.0W4.5, and the contents in the tank 9 is sent to the oxidation tower 12. CaSO
3 in slurry is oxidized by air sent from line 13 to give gypsum, which is filtered by filter 16 and recovered as gypsum 17.
