1. 2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said feed means includes a passage through which the connector stock is displaced into the path of movement of said head, said press head being adapted for movement in opposite directions along said path and between a first position on one side of said passage and a second position on the other side thereof, and means responsive to movement of said press head from said second position to said first position for actuating said feeding means to feed said predetermined length of stock into the path of movement of said head.
3. Apparatus according to claim 2 including means comprising an element carried by said support structure and engageable with the teeth between the transverse rows thereof, said element being spaced from said cutting edge a predetermined distance such that next adjacent transversely extending rows of teeth lie on opposite sides of said cutting edge when the stock is cut.
4. Apparatus According to claim 1 including a reel for carrying the connector stock in coil form, and means carried by said support structure mounting said reel for rotary movement.
5. Apparatus according to claim 4 wherein said feed means includes a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced receiving and guiding the teeth of the connector stock, and means for clamping the connector stock against the tines.
6. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said feed means includes a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced recesses for receiving and guiding the teeth of the connector stock, and means for clamping the connector stock against the tines.
7. Apparatus according to claim 1 including means carried by said support structure for maintaining the connector plate in the path of movement of said head after the connector plate is cut from the connector stock.
8. Apparatus according to claim 1 including means carried by said support apparatus and spaced a predetermined distance from said cutting edge for engagement with the connector stock to align the stock relative to said cutting edge such that the teeth of the stock lie on opposite sides of said cutting edge when the stock is cut whereby the stock fed into the path of movement of the press head is cut between the teeth.
9. Apparatus for cutting elongated sheet metal connector stock of the type having a plurality of teeth struck integrally therefrom to form a discrete connector plate and embedding the teeth of the connector plate into a pair of adjoining wooden members comprising: support structure, a press head carried by said support structure for movement along a predetermined path, means for moving said press head along said predetermined path, means carried by said support structure for feeding the connector stock into the path of the movement of said head, cooperable means carried by said support structure and said press head including a cutting edge for cutting the stock as said press head moves along said path thereby to form a connector plate of predetermined length, means carried by said apparatus for locating the adjoining wooden members in opposition to said press head, said head being adapted to press the teeth of the connector plate into one side of the adjoining wooden members upon continued movement of said head along said path, said feed means including a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced recesses for receiving and guiding the teeth of the connector stock, means for clamping the connector stock against the tines with the ends thereof engageable against the side of the stock from which the teeth project, and means for advancing said guide means and said clamping means substantially simultaneously to locate portions of the connector stock in the path of movement of said head.
10. Apparatus according to claim 9 wherein said feed means includes a passage through which the connector stock is displaced into the path of movement of said head, said press head being adapted for movement in opposite directions along said path and between a first position on one side of said passage and a second position on the other side thereof, and means responsive to movement of said press head from said second position to said first position for actuating said feeding means to feed a predetermined length of stock into the path of movement of said head.
11. Apparatus according to claim 9 including means comprising an element carried by said support structure and engageable with the teeth between the transverse rows thereof, said element being spaced from said cutting edge a predetermined distance such that next adjacent transversely extending rows of teeth lie on opposite sides of said cutting edge when the stock is cut.
12. Apparatus according to claim 9 including a reel for carrying the connector stock in coil form, and means carried by said support structure mounting said reEl for rotary movement.
13. Apparatus according to claim 9 including means carried by said support structure for maintaining the connector plate in the path of movement of said head after the connector plate is cut from the connector stock.
14. Apparatus according to claim 9 including means carried by said support apparatus and engageable with the connector stock for aligning the stock relative to said cutting edge such that the teeth of the stock lie on opposite sides of said cutting edge when the stock is cut whereby the stock fed into the path of movement of the press head is cut between the teeth.
15. Apparatus for cutting elongated sheet metal connector stock of the type having a plurality of teeth struck integrally therefrom to form a discrete connector plate and embedding the teeth of the connector plate into a pair of adjoining wooden members comprising: support structure, a press head carried by said support structure for movement along a predetermined path, means for moving said press head along said predetermined path, a cutting edge carried by said press head for movement therewith, means carried by said support structure for feeding the connector stock in a substantially fixed plane into the path of the movement of said head, reaction means carried by said support structure and cooperable with said cutting edge for cutting the stock as said press head moves along said path thereby to form a connector plate of predetermined length, means carried by said apparatus for locating the adjoining wooden members in opposition to said press head, said head being adapted to press the teeth of the connector plate into one side of the adjoining wooden members upon continued movement of said head along said path, and means carried by said support structure and spaced a predetermined distance from said cutting edge for engagement with the connector stock to align the stock relative to said cutting edge such that the teeth lie on opposite sides of said cutting edge when the stock is cut whereby the stock is cut between the teeth.
16. Apparatus according to claim 15 wherein said feed means includes a passage through which the connector stock is displaced into the path of movement of said head, said press head being adapted for movement in opposite directions along said path and between a first position on one side of said passage and a second position on the other side thereof, and means responsive to movement of said press head from said second position to said first position for actuating said feeding means to feed a predetermined length of stock into the path of movement of said head.
17. Apparatus according to claim 15 including a reel for carrying the connector stock in coil form, and means carried by said support structure mounting said reel for rotary movement.
18. Apparatus according to claim 15 wherein said engageable means includes an element movable into a first position between the teeth of the connector stock and a second position clear thereof, and means carried by said support structure for moving said element into said first position responsive to completion of the feed of connector stock into the path of movement of said head.
19. Apparatus according to claim 15 including means carried by said support structure for maintaining the connector plate in the path of movement of said head after the connector plate is cut from the connector stock.
20. Apparatus for cutting elongated sheet metal connector stock of the type having a plurality of teeth struck integrally therefrom to form discrete connector plates and embedding the teeth of the connector plates into a pair of adjoining wooden members comprising: support structure, a press head carried by said support structure for movement along a predetermined path, means for moving said press head along said predetermined path, a cutting edge carried by said press head for movement therewith, means carried by said support structure for feeding the connector stock in a substAntially fixed plane into the path of the movement of said head, reaction means carried by said support structure and cooperable with said cutting edge for cutting the stock as said press head moves along said path thereby to form a connector plate of predetermined length, means carried by said apparatus for locating the adjoining wooden members in opposition to said press head, said head being adapted to press the teeth of the connector plate into one side of the adjoining wooden members upon continued movement of said head along said path, a second press head carried by said support structure for movement along a second predetermined path and located in spaced opposition to said first press head, means for moving said second press head along said predetermined path, a cutting edge carried by said second press head for movement therewith, means carried by said support structure for feeding the connector stock in a substantially fixed plane into the path of movement of said second press head, reaction means carried by said support structure and cooperable with the second cutting edge for cutting the latter stock as said second press head moves along said second path thereby to form a connector plate of predetermined length, said second head being adapted to embed the teeth of the latter connector plate into the opposite side of the adjoining wooden members upon continued movement of said second head along said path, means for substantially simultaneously moving said first and second press heads towards one another whereby the connector plates are substantially simultaneously embedded on opposite sides of the adjoining wooden members, the first and second mentioned feeding means including means for actuating the same substantially simultaneously to feed a predetermined length of the stock into the path of movement of each of said first and second press heads, said first and second feeding means each including a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced recesses for receiving and guiding the teeth of the connector stock and means for clamping the connector stock against the respective tines with the ends thereof engageable against the side of the stock from which the teeth project, and means for advancing said guide means and said clamping means substantially simultaneously to locate portions of the connector stock in the respective paths of movement of said first and second press heads.
21. Apparatus according to claim 20 wherein each said reaction means includes a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced recesses for receiving said guiding the teeth of the connector stock, the ends of said tines being engageable against the side of the stock from which the teeth project and substantially along the line of cut of said cutting edge along the stock when the associated press head and reaction means cooperate to cut the plate.
22. Apparatus according to claim 20 including means carried by said support structure and spaced a predetermined distance from each said cutting edge for engagement with the associated connector stock to align such stock relative to the associated cutting edge such that next adjacent transversely extending rows of teeth lie on opposite sides of the associated cutting edge when the stock is cut whereby the stock is cut along a transverse line between the next adjacent transverse rows of teeth.
23. Apparatus according to claim 20 wherein each said reaction means includes a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced recesses for receiving and guiding the teeth of the connector stock, the ends of said tines being engageable against the side of the stock from which the teeth project when the associated press head and reaction means cooperate to cut the plate, and means carried by said support structure and spaced a predetermined distance from each said cutting edge for engagement with the associated connector stock to align such stock Relative to the associated cutting edge such that next adjacent transversely extending rows of teeth lie on opposite sides of the associated cutting edge when the stock is cut whereby the stock is cut along a transverse line between the next adjacent transverse rows of teeth.
24. Apparatus according to claim 20 including means carried by said support structure for maintaining the connector plates in the paths of movement of said first and second heads respectively after the connector plates are cut from the connector stock.
25. Apparatus for cutting elongated sheet metal connector stock of the type having a plurality of teeth struck integrally therefrom to form discrete connector plates and embedding the teeth of the connector plates into a pair of adjoining wooden members along the opposite sides thereof comprising: support structure, a press head carried by said support structure for movement along a predetermined path, means for moving said press head along said predetermined path, a cutting edge carried by said press head for movement therewith, means carried by said support structure for feeding the connector stock in a substantially fixed plane into the path of the movement of said head, reaction means carried by said support structure and cooperable with said cutting edge for cutting the stock as said press head moves along said path thereby to form a connector plate of predetermined length, means carried by said apparatus for locating the adjoining wooden members in opposition to said press head, said head being adapted to press the teeth of the connector plate into one side of the adjoining wooden members upon continued movement of said head along said path, a second press head carried by said support structure for movement along a second predetermined path and located in spaced opposition to said first press head, means for moving said second press head along said predetermined path, a cutting edge carried by said second press head for movement therewith, means carried by said support structure for feeding the connector stock in a substantially fixed plane into the path of movement of said second press head, reaction means carried by said support structure and cooperable with the second cutting edge for cutting the latter stock as said second press head moves along said second path thereby to form a connector plate of predetermined length, said second head being adapted to embed the teeth of the latter connector plate into the opposite side of the adjoining wooden members upon continued movement of said second head along said path, said support structure including a generally C-shaped frame with said first and second press heads being carried by the respective legs of said C-shaped frame in opposition to one another, a pair of reels carried by said support structure for supplying coiled connector stock to both said feeding means with the teeth of the connector stock from the respective reels facing one another, each said feeding means including a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced recesses for receiving and guiding the teeth of the connector stock and means for clamping the connector stock against the respective tines with the ends thereof engageable against the side of the stock from which the teeth project, and means for advancing said guide means and said clamping means substantially simultaneously to locate portions of the connector stock in the respective paths of movement of said first and second press heads.
26. Apparatus according to claim 25 wherein each said reaction means includes a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced recesses for receiving and guiding the teeth of the connector stock, the ends of said tines being engageable against the side of the stock from which the teeth project and substantially along the line of cut along the stock when the associated press head and reaction means cooperate to cut the plate.
27. Apparatus According to claim 25 including means carried by said support structure and spaced a predetermined distance from each said cutting edge for engagement with the associated connector stock to align the stock relative to the associated cutting edge such that next adjacent transversely extending rows of teeth lie on opposite sides of the associated cutting edge when the stock is cut whereby the stock is cut along a transverse line between the next adjacent transverse rows of teeth.
28. Apparatus according to claim 25 wherein each said reaction means includes a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced recesses for receiving and guiding the teeth of the connector stock, the ends of said tines being engageable against the side of the stock from which the teeth project when the associated press head and reaction means cooperate to cut the plate, and means carried by said support structure and spaced a predetermined distance from each said cutting edge for engagement with the associated connector stock to align such stock relative to the associated cutting edge such that next adjacent transversely extending rows of teeth lie on opposite sides of associated cutting edge when the stock is cut whereby the stock is cut along a transverse line between the next adjacent transverse rows of teeth.
29. Apparatus according to claim 25 including means carried by said support structure for maintaining the connector plates in the paths of movement of said first and second heads respectively after the connector plates are cut from the connector stock.
30. Apparatus for cutting elongated sheet metal connector stock of the type having a plurality of teeth struck integrally therefrom to form discrete connector plates and embedding the teeth of the connector plates into the opposite sides of a pair of adjoining wooden members comprising: support structure, a press head carried by said support structure for movement along a predetermined path, means for moving said press head along said predetermined path, means carried by said support structure for feeding the connector stock into the path of the movement of said head, cooperable means carried by said support structure and said press head including a cutting edge for cutting the stock as said press head moves along said path thereby to form a connector plate of predetermined length, means carried by said apparatus for locating the adjoining wooden members in opposition to said press head, said head being adapted to press the teeth of the connector plate into one side of the adjoining wooden members upon continued movement of said head along said path, a second press head carried by said support structure for movement along a second predetermined path and located in spaced opposition to said first press head, means for moving said second press head along said second predetermined path, means carried by said support structure for feeding the connector stock into the path of movement of said second press head, cooperable means carried by said support structure and said second press head including a second cutting edge for cutting the latter stock as said second press head moves along said second path thereby to form a connector plate of predetermined length, said second head being adapted to embed the teeth of the latter connector plate into the opposite side of the adjoining wooden members upon continued movement of said second head along said path, and means for substantially simultaneously moving said first and second press heads towards one another with each head serving as a reaction force for the opposed head whereby the connector plates are substantially simultaneously embedded on opposite sides of the adjoining wooden members.
31. Apparatus according to claim 3 wherein each of said cooperable cutting means includes a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced recesses for receiving and guiding the teeth of the connector stock, the ends oF said tines being engageable against the side of the stock from which the teeth project and against the stock substantially along its predetermined line of cut when said cutting means cooperate to cut the plate.
32. Apparatus according to claim 30 wherein each said feed means includes a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced recesses for receiving and guiding the teeth of the connector stock, and means for clamping the connector stock against the tines with the ends thereof engageable against the side of the stock from which the teeth project.
33. Apparatus according to claim 30 including means carried by said support structure and spaced a predetermined distance from each said cutting edge for engagement with the associated connector stock to align such stock relative to the associated cutting edge such that next adjacent transversely extending rows of teeth lie on opposite sides of the associated cutting edge when the stock is cut whereby the stock is cut along a transverse line between the next adjacent transverse rows of teeth.
34. Apparatus according to claim 30 including a pair of reels for carrying the connector stock in coil form and means carried by said support structure mounting said reels for rotary movement.
35. Apparatus according to claim 30 wherein each said cooperable cutting means includes a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced recesses for receiving and guiding the teeth of the connector stock, the ends of said tines being engageable against the side of the stock from which the teeth project and against the stock substantially along its predetermined line of cut when said cutting means cooperate to cut the plate, each said feed means including a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced recesses for receiving and guiding the teeth of the connector stock, and means for clamping the connector stock against the tines.
36. Apparatus according to claim 30 including means carried by said support structure for maintaining the connector plates in the paths of movement of said first and second heads respectively after the connector plates are cut from the connector stock.
37. Apparatus according to claim 36 wherein said maintaining means includes an element engageable with each connector plate to grip such plates and maintain them in the respective paths of movement of said heads upon continued movement of said heads after the connector plates are cut from the connector stock.
38. Apparatus according to claim 37 wherein each of said elements comprises a projection projecting into the path of movement of the corresponding head.
39. Apparatus according to claim 38 wherein each of said projections comprise a tongue carried by each of said reaction means, each said cutting edge being formed to cut a groove in the corresponding connector plate complementary in shape to the tongue carried by the associated reaction means whereby each tongue is receivable within the groove in the associated plate upon continued movement of corresponding head and thereby restrains the associated plate from movement out of the path of movement of the corresponding head.
40. Apparatus for cutting elongated sheet metal connector stock of the type having a plurality of teeth struck integrally therefrom to form a discrete connector plate and embedding the teeth of the connector plate into a pair of adjoining wooden members comprising: support structure, a press head carried by said support structure for movement along a predetermined path, means carried by said support structure for feeding the connector stock in a substantially fixed plane into the path of movement of said head, cooperable means carried by said support structure and said press head including a cutting edge for cutting the stock as said press head moves along said path thereby to form a connector plate of predetermined length, means carried by said Apparatus for locating the adjoining wooden members in opposition to said press head, said head being adapted to press the teeth of the connector plate into one side of the adjoining members upon continued movement of said head along said path, and means carried by said support structure including a part of said cooperable cutting means for maintaining the connector plate in the path of movement of said head after the connector plate is cut from the connector stock.
41. Apparatus according to claim 40 wherein said maintaining means includes an element engageable with the plate to grip the latter and maintain it in the path of movement of the head upon continued movement of said head after the connector plate is cut from the connector stock.
42. Apparatus according to claim 40 wherein said element comprises a projection projecting into the path of movement of said head.
43. Apparatus according to claim 42 wherein said projection comprises a tongue carried by said support structure, said cutting edge being carried by said press head and formed to cut a groove in the connector plate complementary in shape to said tongue whereby the tongue is receivable within the groove in the plate upon continued movement of said head and thereby restrains the plate from movement out of the path of movement of said head.
44. Apparatus for cutting elongated sheet metal connector stock of the type having a plurality of teeth struck integrally therefrom to form discrete connector plates and embedding the teeth of the connector plates into the joints between a pair of spaced wooden members and an intermediate member therebetween comprising: means for supporting a pair of wooden members spaced laterally one from the other and an intermediate member therebetween, support structure, a press head carried by said support structure adjacent one side of said support means, said press head being mounted for movement along a predetermined path, means for moving said press head along said predetermined path, a cutting edge carried by said press head for movement therewith, means carried by said support structure for feeding the connector stock in a substantially fixed plane into the path of movement of said head, reaction means carried by said support structure and cooperable with said cutting edge for cutting the stock as said press head moves along said path thereby to form a connector plate of predetermined length, means carried by said apparatus for locating the joint between the one side member and intermediate member in opposition to said press head, said head being adapted to press the teeth of the connector plate into one side of such ajoining wooden members upon continued movement of said head along said path, a second press head carried by said support structure adjacent the opposite side of said support means and for movement along a second path, means for moving said second press head along said predetermined path, a cutting edge carried by said second press head for movement therewith, means carried by said support structure for feeding connector stock in a substantially fixed plane into the path of movement of said second head, reaction means carried by said support structure and cooperable with said second cutting edge for cutting the stock as said second press head moves along said second path thereby to form a connector plate of predetermined length, means carried by said support structure for locating the joint between the intermediate member and the other side member in opposition to said second press head, said second head being adapted to embed the teeth of the latter connector plate into one side of the adjoining intermediate and other side members upon continued movement of said second head along said second path, means mounting one of said press heads for movement toward and away from the other of said press heads whereby the distance between said press heads is adjustable, and means for securing the one movable press head in a selected adjustable position relAtive to the other press head.
45. Apparatus according to claim 44 including means carried along opposite sides of said support means for clamping the side members and intermediate member one to the other.
46. Apparatus for cutting elongated sheet metal connector stock of the type having a plurality of teeth struck integrally therefrom and spaced longitudinally therealong to form a discrete connector plate and embedding the teeth of the connector plate into a pair of adjoining wooden members comprising: support structure, a press head carried by said support structure for movement along a predetermined path, means for moving said press head along said predetermined path, means carried by said support structure for feeding the connector stock in a substantially fixed plane into the path of the movement of said head, cooperable means carried by said support structure and said press head including a cutting edge for cutting the stock as said press head moves along said path thereby to form a connector plate of predetermined length, means carried by said apparatus for locating the adjoining wooden members in opposition to said press head, said head being adapted to press the teeth of the connector plate into one side of the adjoining wooden members upon continued movement of said head along said path, and means carried by said support structure and spaced a predetermined distance from said cutting edge for engagement with the connector stock to align the stock relative to said cutting edge such that next adjacent transversely extending rows of teeth lie on opposite sides of said cutting edge whereby the stock is cut along a transverse line between the next adjacent transverse rows of teeth.
47. Apparatus according to claim 46 wherein said feed means includes a passage through which the connector stock is displaced into the path of movement of said head, said press head being adapted for movement in opposite directions along said path and between a first position on one side of said passage and a second position on the other side thereof, and means responsive to movement of said press head from said second position to said first position for actuating said feeding means to feed a predetermined length of stock into the path of movement of said head.
48. Apparatus according to claim 46 including a reel for carrying the connector stock in coil form, and means carried by said support structure mounting said reel for rotary movement.
49. Apparatus according to claim 46 wherein said engageable means includes an element movable into a first position between the teeth of the connector stock and a second position clear thereof, and means carried by said support structure for moving said element into said first position responsive to completion of the feed of connector stock into the path of movement of said head.
50. Apparatus for cutting elongated sheet metal connector stock of the type having a plurality of teeth struck integrally therefrom to form discrete connector plates and embedding the teeth of the connector plates into the joints between a pair of spaced wooden members and an intermediate member therebetween comprising: a conveyor for carrying a pair of wooden members along its opposite sides and an intermediate member therebetween, support structure, a press head carried by said support structure adjacent one side of said conveyor for movement along a predetermined path, means for moving said press head along said predetermined path, means carried by said support structure for feeding the connector stock in a substantially fixed plane into the path of the movement of said head, cooperable means carried by said support structure and said press head including a cutting edge for cutting the stock as said press head moves along said path thereby to form a connector plate of predetermined length, means carried by said apparatus for locating the joint between one of the side members and the intermediate member in opposition to said press head, said head being adapted to press the teeth of the connector plate into one side of such adjoining wooden members upon continued movement of said head along said path, a second press head carried by said support structure adjacent the opposite side of said conveyor and for movement along a second predetermined path, means for moving said second press head along said second predetermined path, means carried by said support structure for feeding connector stock in a substantially fixed plane into the path of movement of said second head, cooperable means carried by said support structure and said second press head including a second cutting edge for cutting the stock as said second press head moves along said second predetermined path thereby to form a connector plate of predetermined length, means carried by said support structure for locating the joint between the intermediate member and the other side member in opposition to said second press head, said second head being adapted to embed the teeth of the latter connector plate into one side of the adjoining intermediate and other side members upon continued movement of said second head along said second path.

Apparatus according to claim 50 including means for locating said intermediate and side members in a first position in transverse alignment one with the other and means coupled to said press heads for substantially simultaneously moving said first and second heads along their predetermined paths for embedding the respective connector plates into the wooden members to form a partially completed frame.
52. Apparatus according to claim 51 including means carried by said apparatus for clamping the side and intermediate members one to the other.
53. Apparatus according to claim 51 wherein the intermediate and side members form a partially completed frame, means for advancing the frame along the conveyor into a second position, means carried by said conveyor and spaced from said press heads for locating the partially completed frame in said second position with a portion of the side frame members in opposition to the respective press heads, and means carried by said apparatus for locating a second intermediate member in alignment with said press head and portions of the side frame members in said second position of said frame whereby said heads are adapted to apply connector plates to the side and second intermediate members.
54. Apparatus according to claim 50 including a pair of reels for carrying the connector stock in coil form and means carried by said support structure mounting said reels for rotary movement and for feeding connector stock to the respective press heads.
55. Apparatus for cutting elongated sheet metal connector stock of the type having a plurality of teeth struck integrally therefrom to form discrete connector plates and embedding the teeth of the connector plates into the opposite sides of a pair of adjoining wooden members comprising: support structure, a press head carried by said support structure for movement along a predetermined path, means for moving said press head along said predetermined path, means carried by said support structure for feeding the connector stock in a substantially fixed plane into the path of the movement of said head, cooperable means carried by said support structure and said press head including a cutting edge for cutting the stock as said press head moves along said path thereby to form a connector plate of predetermined length, means carried by said apparatus for locating the adjoining wooden members in opposition to said press head, said head being adapted to press the teeth of the connector plate into one side of the adjoining wooden members upon continued movement of said head along said path, a second press head carried by said support structure for movement along a second predetermined path and located in spaced opposition to said first press head, means for moving said second press head along said second predetermined path, means carried by said Support structure for feeding the connector stock in a substantially fixed plane into the path of movement of said second press head, cooperable means carried by said support structure and said second press head including a second cutting edge for cutting the latter stock as said second press head moves along said second path thereby to form a connector plate of predetermined length, said second head being adapted to embed the teeth of the latter connector plate into the opposite side of the adjoining wooden members upon continued movement of said second head along said second path, and means for substantially simultaneously moving said first and second press heads towards one another whereby the connector plates are substantially simultaneously embedded on opposite sides of the adjoining wooden members.
56. Apparatus according to claim 55 including means carried by said support apparatus and spaced a predetermined distance from each said cutting edge for engagement with the associated connector stock to align such stock relative to the associated cutting edge such that the teeth of the stock lie on opposite sides of the associated cutting edge when the stock is cut whereby the stock fed into the path of movement of said first press head is cut along a line between its teeth and the stock fed into the path of movement of said second press head is cut along a line between its teeth.
57. Apparatus according to claim 56 including means for actuating said engageable means in response to completion of the feed of the connector stock into the paths of movement of said press heads.
58. Apparatus according to claim 56 including means carried by said support structure for maintaining the connector plates in the respective paths of movement of said heads after the connector plates are cut from the connector stock.
59. Apparatus according to claim 58 wherein said maintaining means includes an element engageable with each connector plate to grip such plates and maintain them in the respective paths of movement of said heads upon continued movement of said heads after the connector plates are cut from the connector stock.
60. Apparatus according to claim 59 wherein each of said elements comprises a projection projecting into the path of movement of the corresponding head.
61. Apparatus according to claim 60 wherein each of said projections comprises a tongue carried by each of said reaction means, each said cutting edge being formed to cut a groove in the corresponding connector plate complementary in shape to the tongue carried by the associated reaction means whereby each tongue is receivable within the groove in the associated plate upon continued movement of corresponding heads and thereby restrains the associated plate from movement out of the path of movement of the corresponding head.
62. Apparatus for cutting first and second strips of elongated sheet metal connector stock of the type having a plurality of teeth struck integrally therefrom to form discrete connector plates and embedding the teeth of the connector plates into the joints between a pair of spaced wooden members and an intermediate member therebetween comprising: a conveyor for carrying a pair of wooden members along its opposite sides and an intermediate member therebetween, support structure, a first press head carried by said support structure adjacent one side of said conveyor for movement along a first predetermined path, means for moving said press head along said first predetermined path, means carried by said support structure for feeding the first strip of connector stock in a substantially fixed plane into the path of the movement of said head, cooperable means carried by said support structure and said press head including a cutting edge for cutting the first strip of stock as said press head moves along said first path thereby to form a first connector plate of predetermined length, means carried by said apparatus for locating the joint between one of the side membeRs and the intermediate member in opposition to said first press head, said first head being adapted to press the teeth of the first connector plate into one side of such adjoining wooden members upon continued movement of said first head along said path, a second press head carried by said support structure adjacent the opposite side of said conveyor and for movement along a second predetermined path, means for moving said second press head along said second predetermined path, means carried by said support structure for feeding the second strip of connector stock in a substantially fixed plane into the path of movement of said second head, cooperable means carried by said support structure and said second press head including a cutting edge for cutting the second strip of stock as said second press head moves along said second path thereby to form a second connector plate of predetermined length, means carried by said support structure for locating the joint between the intermediate member and the other side member in opposition to said second press head, said second head being adapted to embed the teeth of the latter connector plate into one side of the adjoining intermediate and other side members upon continued movement of said second head along said path.
63. Apparatus according to claim 62 including means coupled to said first and second press heads for substantially simultaneously embedding the first and second connector plates into the respective wooden members.
64. Apparatus according to claim 63 including means carried by said apparatus for clamping the side and intermediate members one to the other.
65. Apparatus according to claim 63 wherein the intermediate and side members form a partially completed frame, means for advancing the frame along the conveyor into a second position, means carried by said conveyor and spaced from said first and second press heads for locating the partially completed frame in said second position with a portion of the side frame members in respective opposition to said first and second press heads, and means carried by said apparatus for locating the joints between opposite ends of a second intermediate member and portions of the side frame members in said second position of said frame in respective alignment with said first and second press heads whereby said heads are adapted to apply connector plates to the side and second intermediate members.
66. Apparatus according to claim 62 including a pair of reels for carrying the respective first and second strips of connector stock in coil form and means carried by said support structure mounting said reels for rotary movement.
67. Apparatus according to claim 62 wherein each said cooperable means includes a plurality of laterally spaced recesses for receiving and guiding the teeth of the associated strip of connector stock, the ends of said tines being engageable against the side of the stock from which the teeth project and against such stock strip substantially along its line of cut when said cutting means cooperate to cut the plate.
68. Apparatus according to claim 62 including means spaced a predetermined distance from each cutting edge for engagement with the associated strip of connector stock to align such strip relative to the associated cutting edge such that next adjacent transversely extending rows of teeth of such stock strip lie on opposite sides of the associated cutting edge when such stock strip is cut whereby such stock strip is cut along a transverse line between the next adjacent transverse rows of teeth.
69. Apparatus according to claim 62 wherein each said cooperable means includes a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced recesses for receiving and guiding the teeth of the associated connector stock strip, the ends of said tines being engageable against the side of the stock strip from which the teeth project and against such stock strip substantially along its line of cut when said cutting means cooperate to cut the plate, and means spaced a predetermined distance from each cutting edge for engagement with the associated strip of connector stock to align such stock strip relative to the associated cutting edge such that next adjacent transversely extending rows of teeth lie on opposite sides of the associated cutting edge when such stock strip is cut whereby the stock strip is cut along a transverse line between next adjacent transverse rows of teeth.
70. Apparatus according to claim 62 wherein each said feed means includes a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced recesses for receiving and guiding the teeth of the associated connector stock strip, and means for clamping such connector stock strip against the tines.
71. Apparatus according to claim 62 wherein each said feed means includes a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced recesses for receiving and guiding the teeth of the associated connector stock strip, means for clamping the connector stock strip against the tines, and means spaced a predetermined distance from each cutting edge for engagement with the associated connector stock strip to align such stock strip relative to the associated cutting edge such that next adjacent transversely extending rows of teeth lie on opposite sides of the associated cutting edge when the stock strip is cut whereby the stock strip is cut along a transverse line between the next adjacent transverse rows of teeth.
72. Apparatus according to claim 62 wherein each said cooperating means includes a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced recess for receiving and guiding the teeth of the associated connector stock strip, the ends of said tines being engageable against the side of the stock from which the teeth project and against such stock strip substantially along its line of cut when said cutting means cooperate to cut the plate, each said feed means including a guide member having a plurality of tines defining a plurality of laterally spaced recess for receiving and guding the teeth of the connector stock strip, and means for clamping the connector strock strip against the tines.
73. Apparatus according to claim 62 including means carried by said support structure for maintaining the connector plates in the first and second paths of movement of said first and second heads respectively after the first and second connector plates are cut from the respective first and second strips of connector stock.
74. Apparatus according to claim 62 wherein third and fourth strips of connector stock of a type similar to the first and second strips of stock are cut to form third and fourth discrete connector plates, including third and fourth press heads carried by said support structure on respective opposite sides of said conveyor with said third head disposed in opposition to said first head and said fourth head disposed in opposition to said second head, each of said third and fourth heads being mounted for movement along third and fourth paths respectively, means for moving said third and fourth press heads along said third and fourth paths, means carried by said support structure for feeding connector stock into the path of movement of said third and fourth press heads, cooperable means carried by said support structure and said third press head including a cutting edge for cutting the third strip of connector stock as said third press head moves along said third predetermined path thereby to form a third connector plate of predetermined length, cooperable means carried by said support structure and said fourth press head including a cutting edge for cutting the fourth strip of connector stock as said fourth press head moves along said fourth predetermined path thereby to form a fourth connector plate of predetermined length, said third and fourth heads being adapted to embed the teeth of the respective third and Fourth connector plates into the adjoining side and intermediate members on respective opposite sides of the conveyor and on opposite sides of the wooden members from said first and second press heads upon continued movement of said third and fourth heads along said third and fourth paths.
75. Apparatus according to claim 74 wherein the intermediate and side members form a partially completed frame, means for advancing the frame along the conveyor into a second position, means carried by said conveyor and spaced from said press heads for locating the partially completed frame in said second position with a portion of the side frame members in opposition to the respective press heads, and means carried by said apparatus for locating a second intermediate member in alignment with said press heads and portions of the side frame members in said second position of said frame whereby said heads are adapted to apply connector plates to the side and second intermediate members.
