1. The method of texturizing synthetic fibers in a yarn including the steps of travelling the yarn at a constant rate through a texturizing zone under enough tension to cause the axis of the yarn to travel freely therethrough in a straight line, peening the yarn in the texturizing zone by striking and confining it with impacts acting from the sides across the texturizing zone at a rate which is at least sonic, said impacts being delivered at acute angles to said straight line and having components of motion both in the direction of the axis of the yarn and transversely thereof and the impacts producing cusps in the fibers which permanently distort their cross sections and provide in the fibers non-normal vector stresses about the axis of the yarn, and the rate of the impacts as compared with the rate of travel of the yarn being so high that the impacts lap over each other and produce overlapping adjacent cusps.
2. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein said impacts are applied at an acute angle lying within the range of 2* through 45* with respect to said line of travel.
3. The method as set forth in claim 1, including the steps of alternately backing the fibers on one side while peening said opposite side and then backing the fibers on said opposite side while peening said one side, whereby to non-symetrically distort the fibers along their lengths.
4. The method as set forth in claim 1, including the steps of alternately crimping a length of the fibers within the zone into a multiple zig-zag configuration by peening them between impacts converging in the zone simultaneously at plural axially spaced locations to achieve said configuration and subsequently releasing them, and repeating said converging peening and releasing steps plural times for each length of the fibers before they leave said zone.
5. The method as set forth in claim 1, including the steps of heating the fibers before travelling them through said texturizing zone and thereafter alternately impacting them while clamping them in heat exchange relationship to transfer effected heat transfer therefrom, and then releasing the fibers.
6. The method as set forth in claim 1, including the step of peening said fibers by applying impacts inclined diagonally across the axis of the yarn to form a pattern of striations which are skewed out of perpendicular relationship with respect to the length of the fiber whereby to produce in the relaxed fiber a helical curl characteristic.
7. The method as set forth in claim 1, including the step of peening said fibers by applying impacts in said zone simultaneously at plural axially spaced locations to apply thereto a pattern of transversely disposed cusps which extends axially along the yarn by a distance which is long in comparison with the distance travelled by the fibers between peenings whereby the same lengths of fibers are peened many times before the fibers leave the texturizing zone.
