The terminal 11 of the 3rd electrode 10 and the terminal 12 of the counter electrode 5 are connected by way of a diode (it is also possible to incorporate this in an IC for driving the EC element) 14 or by way of the diode 14 and a resistance. It is equally well to connect both electrodes 5, 10 at suitable time intervals based on the signal in the IC.
