CONSTITUTION: A coal is ground in water followed by adding a mineral acid such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc. to bring the system to a highly acidic state. The system is then treated with an alkali, and, if required, repeating further acid/ alkali treatment. Organic substances such as humic acid, etc. is thus separated from inorganic compounds, resulting in formation of humic acid alkali salt. On the other hand, mineral oils such as an unsatured petroleum. tar, shale oil, etc. are chlorinated by chlorine gas or hydrochloric acid, etc. to produce a chloride of hydrocarbon oil. The oil is then combined with the humic acid alkali salt to form a humic acid- hydrocarbon oil combination product, followed by filtering off by-produced sodium chloride, inorganic compounds of coal, etc., and carrying out dehydration under pressure, thus obtaining the objective ash-free coal.
