4 -N in the circulated denitrified liquid is oxidized into NO
x -N such as NO
2 -N or NO
3 -N by nitrifying bacteria and O
2 , the liquid is circulated to the denitrifying section 1 through a communication passage 3. O
2 -containing gas 7 such as air is introduced into the discharge pipe 6 of the pump 4. Aeration is caused by the fall of the pump discharge flow onto the surface of the liquid in the nitrifying section 2.
