Meanwhile, the amt. of oxygen dissolved in the sewage is detected by a dissolved oxygen meter 15, and the valve 9 is opened and closed when the detected amt. reaches the predetermined value. In this case, when the aerator is operated while closing the valve 9, the sewage is agitated and the fermentation by aerobic bacteria proceeds. And the concn. of the dissolved oxygen is rapidly decreased due to the consumption of oxygen. When the concn. of the dissolved oxygen reaches a specified lower limit, the valve 9 is opened to carry out aerobic nitration.
