An improved method, apparatus, and computer instructions in a portable device for obtaining bids for a task. Access to a task in a set of tasks for bidding is provided through a wireless network. The access to the task includes a specification of a selected distance between a bidding entity and a location of the portable device that the bidding entity is required to be located within for generating bids. A bid for the task is received from an entity through the wireless network if the entity is within a selected distance of a location of the portable device. The bid may be accepted for completing the task. |

Embodiments of the invention provide an anonymous RFQ system for financial instruments that resolves the inherent conflict between a capital provider's need for information and a market participant's need for confidentiality by creating an environment where market participants and capital providers can realize the benefits of sharing confidential trading interest (CTI) information without sacrificing anonymity or enabling information leakage. This secure environment preferably is created within an electronic matching book that distills all CTI information related to each Request for Quote (RFQ) into a risk class that is sent to capital providers in lieu of order-identifying or trader-identifying information. These risk classes give capital providers enough information to offer customized, risk-adjusted quotes without requiring the market participant to reveal confidential information about herself or her order. |

Systems and methods for providing valid responses to requests for quotations are provided. In one embodiment of the invention, a system according to the invention preferably includes a server. The server includes a server storage device and a server processor connected to the server storage device. The server storage device preferably stores a server program for controlling the server processor. The server processor is preferably operative to receive a request from a requesting participant for a market-validated offer to sell an item; receive an offer price from a responding participant in response to the request; and provide a bid to an electronic marketplace, the bid including a price that is lower than the received offer price. |

The present invention facilitates the enrollment of a user with multiple request for quote (RFQ) providers. An RFQ provider facilitates the quote/bid process between a user (e.g., a merchant or seller) and a supplier (e.g., a merchant or seller). A quote may include a bid on a product or service that the user has an interest in. A user may submit data related to user information, an RFQ, and/or the like to a request for quote enrollment (RFQE) system. Upon submitting the data to the RFQE system, the user is registered in the RFQE system. The RFQE system uses an integrated system of information to enroll the user with multiple RFQ providers. Thus, the RFQE system expands the distribution opportunities for the user and saves the user time by enrolling the user with multiple RFQ providers. |

A method and apparatus filters and/or sorts responses to electronic requests for quotes for a product or products offered for sale. The method includes comparing first data of each of a plurality electronic quotes to first data of an electronic request for quote. Each of the plurality of electronic quotes is classified as either a matching quote or a non-matching quote in response to the computer system comparing first data of the plurality electronic quotes and the electronic request for quote. Each matching quote is identified as having first data that equals the first data of the electronic request for quote. Each non-matching quote is defined as having first data that does not equal the first data of the electronic request for quote. |

Each of the plurality of electronic quotes is classified as either a matching quote or a non-matching quote. After the quotes are classified, each classified quote is ranked, for example, by the total price of the product or products offered for sale. Classification into distinct categories is used to apply techniques to make quotes comparable. Inexact matches can be adjusted to allow comparison between exact matching quotes and the adjusted inexact matching quotes. |

A method and system for providing a user with insurance premium estimates from insurance providers for an insurance product. Insurance providers for the insurance product are selected by the user. Conditions input indicating conditions effecting the insurance premiums are transmitted from the user's computer to a service computer. The service computer converts the conditions input into a standard format suitable to a common interface and sends the converted conditions input to the user's computer. The converted conditions input is sent from the user's computer to the selected insurance providers without passing through or interacting with the service computer while being sent from the user's computer to the selected insurance providers. The insurance premium estimates from the selected insurance providers are received by the user's computer and displayed on a display unit of the user's computer in accordance with the conditions input and the selected insurance providers. |

A technique for permitting a consumer to compare premium estimates form a plurality of insurance providers based on inputting conditions which affect the premium calculation a single time to a network such as the Internet. A consumer or user initiates a session by connecting his computer to an insurance comparison website provided by a service underwriter. The user inputs various conditions which might affect the premium for a desired insurance product. The user inputs trial-calculation condition data to a predetermined input button or field of the trial-calculation condition input screen and sends the condition data to the service underwriter. The service underwriter converts the condition data into a form suitable for a standard interface and sends the formatted data to computers of one or more participating and user selected insurance companies or underwriters. A premium calculation engine at the computer for each insurance company calculates an estimated premium. This, and other pertinent insurance policy data, is returned to a frame of the result-display screen and the results of the various companies are displayed to the user. |

A system for handling electronic documents, such as requests for quotations used in procurement under an electronic auction, includes several features. Once the need to procure a new item (or service) is identified, an electronic request for quotations (nullRFQnull) is generated. Under one embodiment, one or more electronic forms, such as Web page screens, prompt an RFQ author for data entry. Previously prepared RFQs may be readily retrieved and amended. The system requires certain fields to be completed so that RFQ generation is uniform across an organization and RFQs are unambiguous for suppliers. The electronic RFQ is provided to suppliers well before an auction. |

An improved system and method for market makers of electronic marketplaces provides RFQ processes over a network in a way that shortens the time taken to run an RFQ process without sacrificing effectiveness as a trading mechanism. At the same time, buyers are allowed to research the market without actually submitting RFQs to the electronic marketplace. In this way, the accuracy the market research and the effectiveness of trading is increased by aggregating tentative and historical sell bids from multiple electronic marketplaces. |

A system and method for a manufacturer to attract a customer for a distributor, via a public access network, and perform product information and ordering transactions with the customer, where the order receives the financing approval of the distributor and an associated manufacturer's representative receives a commission. The system and method includes the customer submitting a price/quotation request or product order to a host system via the public access communications network. The host system interacts with the customer, the manufacturer and the distributor in order to fulfill the customer request. The host system retrieves a customer price for the product, where the customer price is based on a predetermined pricing function that varies depending on a customer or distributor identification. The host system may also generate an order for purchase, based on the customer's request, and transmit customer information associated with the order to the distributor for financial acceptance. Upon receiving a signal representing a financial acceptance, a commission is assigned to a manufacturer's representative associated with the order, where the commission is determined based on a predetermined commission function. The host system interacts with the customer, distributor and manufacturer to insure fulfillment of the order, including shipment of the order and settlement of payments. |
