A MIDI-compatible musical instrument controller includes a keyboard having a plurality of keys and circuitry for electronically scanning the keyboard and for producing individual key-depression signals for each key being depressed. Each of the individual key depression signals identifies the key with which it is associated, commences when the key is depressed, and terminates when the key with which it is associated is released. A plurality of note tables is provided for converting each of the individual key depression signals to MIDI note-identifying information. Each note table defines each key as one or more preselected musical notes such that no two of such tables define the plurality of keys with the same MIDI note-identifying information. One of the note tables is selected in response to a user command. Note-start circuitry, responsive to the commencement of an individual key depression signal, is provided for generating MIDI note-on signals corresponding to the one or more musical notes defined for the individual depressed key in the note table selected at the time the individual key depression signal commences. Note-stop circuitry, responsive to the termination of an individual key depression signal, is provided for generating MIDI note-off signals corresponding to the one or more musical notes defined for the individual released key in the note table which was selected during the time when the individual released key was depressed.

SOLUTION: The game machine is basically provided with some patterns given into such storage units as RAM 102, ROM 103, HDD/CD-ROM 104 and the like. These patterns are the patterns to output the MIDI information. Randomly selecting one pattern out of a multiple number of patterns, the player recognizes that patterns as a problem to be given to the player via a multiple number of means while the player operates the various input units along the patterns to be output visually and audibly to generate the MIDI information. The invention, operating on the MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) standard, aims at providing a personal computer user (12) an external peripheral (8) in the form of a table of switching and potentiometric controllers and its managing software (9), the whole set providing real time control of parameters used by controllable client software's (1) or external hardware systems (14) capable of operating the MIDI standard. The invention should be considered as a complementary extension of conventional man-machine interfaces which consist in the keyboard and mouse to the extent that it enables to control parameters from rotary potentiometers, linear potentiometers and switches. The invention comprises two parts, hardware and software. The hardware (8) is a console of controllers whereof the electronic production is very simple, hence inexpensive. The software (9), resident in storage after launching, scans the values of the console of controllers via a connection port (13) of the computer. Said values, whether after being transformed or not, are provided to the client software's in real time by sending messages observing the MIDI standard to a software (10) or hardware (11) MIDI peripheral. The client applications (1) of the invention can be software's of different fields of application (computer-assisted music, computer graphics, and the like) or software's controlling external hardware systems (14) if they authorise it. The invention converts the values derived from the console in the form of MIDI messages. Thus, the software's compatible with said standard can be controlled by the table. Furthermore, the MIDI data can be directly routed to a hardware MIDI peripheral (11) (of the board for instance) to control likewise hardware MIDI machines (15) such as synthesizer, beatbox, sound effects and the like.

MIDI files generally consist of serially listed channel and system messages which include at least program status messages and matching note on and note off messages. The method and apparatus of the present invention may be utilised to ensure the integrity of a source file, a copied or lifted section or a target file by automatically inserting matching note on or note off messages into a file or file section to correct inconsistencies created by such editing. Additionally, program status messages are automatically inserted into source files, copied or lifted sections, or target files to yield results which are consistent with the results which may be obtained by editing digital audio data. Timing information is selectively added or maintained such that MIDI files may be selectively edited without requiring a user to learn a complex MIDI sequencer.
